Customer sacked carpet cleaner mid job
« on: August 02, 2013, 08:59:54 pm »
Had a really bizarre one today.....I and my son arrived at a job 11am , student house 2 beds, 2 flights of stairs and a landing £100  nice easy hour for the 2 of us, there was a scruffy dirty van ,all the way from Doncaster ,40 miles away parked outside , I thought O customer double booked , we wont be cleaning here.

Knocked on the door , Young student girl came to the door , O I double booked sorry , Never mind I said its fine , she looked us up and down and said no , the cleaner who is here can go, despite my insisting that I ws fine for her to cancel, she went upstairs , followed by a fat sweaty , tracky and trainer wearing ,full sleeve of ink "carpet cleaner"   he tried to argue that she owed £20 call out for cancelling , but she was a feisty one and sent him back upstairs to collect his hoses and scruffy kit.  SHe did give him £20 (his charge was £109) .

After he went she said he was a leering nasty man and she was much happier with us . I wonder how many other customers feel the same about their carpet cleaner?

Its one of main criteria to be a success in this industry. The majority of customers are female often in the house by themselves. If they aren't confortable with you there you will never be invited back and will get virtually nil refferals.

Would you want to pay someone in a scruffy old van wearing trackies and trainers?. i wouldnt want them in my house, im not posh, i live in a council house but its all about pride. Looking to expand my car valeting business to carpet cleaning and this is a good point. Appearance matters a lot.

Yeah good point. I heard about a guy who goes around in cut off jeans and wellies! Bet he gets kicked out for the guy with the shiney new uniform all the time.

Don't think Dave gets to meet many of his top end clients.

Just shows the importance of turning up in a uniform and nicely sign written van with professional looking equipment. We are after all hoping to establish a long term relationship with our customers and creating the right impression from the outset is a vital component in that. It also has a direct bearing on repeats and recommendations so it's a no brainier to show up looking anything less than professional.

Disagree with the uniform bit.
Makes them think your working for someone else.
In this hot weather I've been turning up in clean, decent shorts, tee shirt and crocs. With an extra pair of crocs for in the house......nobody as batted an eyelid.
When I have asked people have said why not, it's appropriate for the weather.
They don't expect cleaners to turn up in shirt and trousers.
The gear should be clean and presentable though.
Impossible done straight away, miracles can take a little longer.

It's all about looking the part in every facet of your business and looking professional in a uniform is a part of that.
A lot of our customers comment about how professional we appear right through the process from first contact to the finished job, but then that is the type of customer we aim to serve.

Why not have a summer uniform logo on vests cargo shorts and tidy walking sandals. I could not go a full days carpet cleaning in shirt and trousers and you could forget doing a 6 hour stint on the wand dressed like that. Customers do not object they can see how physical the work is.

How often does a scenerio like Jason had happen? Pretty much never.

If you quote on the phone and turn up looking like council are they going to turn you away? Do first impression count? Yes they do to some degree but WHAT you do is the most important. I know lots of professionals who turn up in T shirt and jeans and they are very very good at what they do. I also know plenty of numptyheads who wear all sorts of getups to look the part and its embarrassing to see.

It's what you do and say that they remember when they recommend and get you back.

A tie is a bit much imo. Smart shirt with embroidered logo and trousers, black shoes.
