CIU  has a fantastic search option. type in 'prices 'which machine'  'rotaries' bonneting 'which chemical'  etc...etc and you will have tons to read.

 spend a few days soaking up that information then come back with more specific questions

stick to window cleaning, get friendly with a carpet cleaner and work out a commission deal with him/her for providing work. The cost and training and marketing is astronomical for a new beginner these days... I would not start up in this industry at the moment...

A lot of people think that you can carpet clean with a rug doctor or a karcher or that type of equipment but in all honestly that type of equipment is just not up to the job. you need to make a reasonable investment even if you buy 2nd hand. You really need to spend a few hundred pounds on a course just to give you an insight into what basic equipment you need. The N.C.C.A. course will give you a good insight. There are things that can go wrong if you do not know what you are doing and if you are thinking of marketing to your existing customer you could end up losing them and their contacts as window cleaning customers, if you do not do a good job. I have been established for 20 years and I am glad that I am not starting out in this economic climate as new customers are very hard to come by. Do not expect too much help until you make some sort of a commitment as many of the long established people on this forum are also finding time quite hard. We get lots of people coming on here who are thinking of starting a carpet cleaning business. Invest in a course  then ask some more specific questions you may get a better response.

Carpet cleaning is a great add on to window cleaning and iam surprised a lot more window cleaners don't do it as its a easy trade to learn and not a big outlay but when you start get a decent machine it saves money in the long run and looks a lot more professional ive been window cleaning 23 years bought my first carpet cleaning machine in 2004 spent about £3000 at my local Prochem dealer and haven't looked back its hard work to start with but its worth it in the long run.

How many people have got £3000  to throw at carpet cleaning for training and equipment, and then hope they get plenty of work, especially in this downturn in the economy ?

I think some carpet cleaners on here think window cleaners just work for beer money most window cleaners I know make over £30,000 easily with very little overheads and most don't even advertise so £3000 to start an add on to there business is nothing whats the worst that can happen they end up selling there machine on ebay.

Struggling carpet cleaners could do worse than run a W.C business alongside, say 2 days a week, would pay the bills.

With start up, window cleaning is probably one of the least expensive businesses to start. A lot less involved than carpet cleaning. It is something that is easier to set than carpet cleaning. I am too busy with what I am doing to contemplate it but have dabbled in the past to get revenue for salaries etc.
