Creased Silk Curtains
« on: May 08, 2013, 06:15:18 pm »
Hi all, been asked by a customer if I can remove creases from some brand new Laura Ashley slk curtains. The company who supplied them have said to see if they can get a professional in to do them as after hanging for 4 weeks the creases are still there. Apparently there is a problem with the dispatch/packaging!!!
I have only done a handfull of curtains in the past, but not silk ones. As they are brand new, I am thinking along the lines of a steamer of some sort. Customer says they have a backing and is emailing some pictures over tonight so should know more then.
Any ideas?
The wife said take them down and iron them…………..I laughed! but then, I may have to eat humble pie if she’s right! ;D

It is difficult to advise somebody over a distance. Although I can identify a lot of carpets and suites from sight fabric is a different matter as in most cases photos are of no use. If they are genuine silk you need to take care. Steam is the best way forward with creases and in most cases creases drop out with the minimum amount of exposure. If the fabric has any pile then you will have dificulty in not distorting the fibres with exposure to steam. If it is a flat fabric then you have a little more chance. Steam from a steam generater is very hot and will damage silk in a short time. Hanging the cutains in a lower temperature steam room would be a safer bet.

Hi their, We do lots of silk curtains. Its simple really, just steam from behind (lining side) and a mist of spray starch on the face side, we use a Propress curtain steamer. Good luck, John

many household irons have vertical steam,if they are mildly creased you could steam and press whilst they are hanging,
if they they have sharp creases hang the curtains stand an ironing board against them vertically and apply steam and a little pressure, basically press them vertically, set the iron to medium hot
alternatively, let a dry cleaner do a press only, then re hang

I would agree with John, i have a propress and i would wrap a cotton towel around the alum head and steam down. This is ok only if its flat weave and there is no embossed pattern on it.
