I'm not sure I understand this 'dig'.

Are you saying that some window cleaners, who've broken the 'hooks' on their ladders, stap them together with a belt, so they stay apart?

I once borrowed a set of ladders; big doubles; to get at some third-story windows.  The window cleaner forgot to tell me that he'd taken the 'tips' off the 'hooks' in an accident when he dropped the upper section which collapsed, slicing off most of the 'hook'. 

So when I used them even though the hooks weren't 'hooks'!  They were 'short-flats'.

I was still daft enough to use them though.

it was happening in 1952 as well...this case has become a test case and is used today to prove similar cases...employers take heed.
