tm noise
« on: August 11, 2013, 09:49:45 am »
Having a truckmount is amazing but I find the noise can either attract good attention or sometimes bad attention.i get a lot of people coming out and looking at whats going on and will often get asked for quotes. But I also get people complaining.  I have a air cooled engine and I know these run at a higher rpm then liquid cooled engine and therefore scream a lot louder. Is there any mods I can do to make it a touch quiter.
I have already run the exhaust thru the floor but the machine still sounds like a spitfire when you are nearby.

Lining the van with sound absorbant material makes a big difference. Most of the noise comes from the blower. What machine and how old is it. Could be your silencers are knackered.

If it is an older machine you could find that the noise isn't coming from one source but many. You can have rattles, knocks, loose panels,   leaking exhausts, bad connections to the blower that together make the whole thing sound louder than it needs to be. So go around and tighten everything up, fix any leaks etc and you might find you can reduce the noise significantly.

air cooled boxer 421, one complaint in 5 years and he was a numpty so told him to go away, politely of course.  ;D

noisier the better i say, bet you don't get tree surgeons worrying about noise levels or road works, or grass cutters or milkmen at 5am or the new glass collecting bin men. noise is part of life,

I think that the people that complain would complain about anything. So few it is not worth worrying about, but I could not do without the work it brings in from curious people. When I worked with portables I got a lot more work when I left the machine outside the door. The noisier the better. Could I remove my silencer?

Nick Holmans got a 7 year old Prowler with no silencers on. You can hear him from 4 streets away. Says its the best advertising he's ever done.

When they come up to complain I just signal to them I can't hear what they are saying because of the noise and carry on.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.
