Genius idea or plain idiotic?
« on: May 14, 2013, 09:41:34 pm »
Just thinking of a way to speed up rug drying - especially when the weather is like it is now. Leave them to dry naturally and there's barely any improvement after 24 hours. Air movers seem to have minimal effect, so I was thinking about having underfloor heating installed in a garage, but it would be a lot of expense and pointless for when you move house etc. Then it occurred to me about using a heated blanket, with a sheet of tarpaulin on top of it (under the rug) to keep it dry.

Whats your thoughts on this?

How about this ash? It could fold up against wall so you can use space when not rug cleaning,

Ideally you need an air mover pointing out or an extractor fan to remove the moist air with a dry air feed in.

You need a dehumidifier. The problem is the humidity is very high so the air can't absorb much more water. Heat will help as for every extra 10 degrees the air can absorb 100% more moisture, problem is when it reaches saturation the drying stops again. Also its an expensive way to do it. With a dehum and some air movement the drying is continuous.

Just watched that video Jamie, looks good. I think a decent dehumidifier might be worth a try - the heat generated from a heated sheet is not likely to be enough to make a significant difference to the amount of moisture the air can hold then?

Dessicant dehum in a controlled/enclosed area with some form of heating to increase air temp and you will have it dry in a few hours.

Why did he  need to draw all those squares, surely he could have done that with sight or just width and length measurements.

Yeah I couldn't be that patient and would just have banged them in all over.
I like the idea of being able to block them while they are cleaned to correct/prevent distortion.
I feel a project coming on.

There's a centrifuge in the " for sale " section which won't literally dry rugs, but will extract a very high percentage of the water and greatly reduce the time needed to hang over poles, or  frames.
Only problems might be;-

Price and the space required.

That's what we have in our drying room, soaking wet rugs dry overnight no problem.

Ash
if you want to borrow a dehum to see the difference it makes before buying  just give me a call.
John is right in what he says though. If you are using a garage for drying you will find that increasing the air temperature will also help as warm air has potential to carry more moisture. It will also make the dehumidifier more effective.

I created a 16x10 drying room fully insulated within my workshop. With a 3 kw heater, fan, dehu i can rugs dry in hours.

Insulation is the key. No sence drying out England.

Cheers gents.

I've got a small domestic dehum, is it likely to have any effect when drying just 1 rug at a time?
