Rain water, given the right conditiions, is almost pure enough to clean windows with, but collecting it in sufficient quantities just isn't possible.
It is no good using a rainwater butt and collecting it off your roof, as soon as the rain hits the roof it will be contanimated :-\
So no-go there dudes 8)

tds 30 odd up north (proper north that is) just let the rain fall in a beaker and test it ;) but as Ian said, it wouldn't be practical - you're not related to mad roy cropper from coronation street are you ;D

My water butt collects from my 1950's  pre-cast garage's roof. (Probably asbestos! ;D) At the tap it reads 75ppm - a lot lower than my garden tap from the mains of over 400ppm.

I use the water for traditional bucket work, the garden and washing the car (which gets done every six months whether it needs it or not!)
It's a game of three halves!
