How does a backpack work?
« on: July 27, 2005, 10:01:26 pm »
Hi all

This may seem a silly question to some but i have never seen them before, how do they work and when do you use them, are they just for certain windows were you cant get a hose there or somethin.

Thanks Daniel

HI Daniel

Depends what type of backpack you use. You can have the old fashioned ones, which you pump the pressure by hand. Or the modern ones, which come with a battery pack and pump, usually 40/ 45psi.

Some people may rely solely on one as a way of operating a water fed pole. However, others much like me use them, when it is more time saving than running 100 meters of hose around a house.

Usually you could clean one to two hoses based on a 20lt backpack, obviously depending if it was a first clean and how particular you want to be.

I would not recommend this as a sole way to operate wfp, however, it would be cheaper than a trolley system and would be a start for wfp.

Hope this helps

Andrew

Hi andrew i use my backpack all day. The reason i got it was because i dont like the thought that some one might trip over the hose and get me in trouble like you might do with a van based system. I just do the tops with it and the bottoms
the traditional way. The battery lasts all day on one overnight charge. Plus if you have a car it fits in the boot perfectly. and rather than move the van from house to house I just wheel the trolly round its perfect. ;D For me.

Hi QED

I like your way of thinking (about tripping on hoses). Personally I would not like to carry the backpack all day, but hey, at least you will get fit.

Just read your other posting with reference to Ebay number 4357356582  -  I am sure I can get them allot cheaper than that, just a word of warning to everyone. You will be hit by import tax if you buy from the states, this for me was £40, so you need to add that to the cost of the backpack plus postage and packing. If there is enough interest in this item, I will have a definite price later tomorrow.

Hi andrew i dont carry it around as i think it is to heavy on my back and a bit awkward. It stays on the trolly/sack trucks and i just wheel it around. I think this way is great also compaired to the trolly with a seperate pump box and battery as it is not so bulky and is more compact.

Hi Martin

I assume you represent Williamson pumps, so here is a proposal for you.

I am not making any money from the advert I have placed and I am aware that Williamson pumps will do discount for larger orders i.e.

                1-5 off   £175.00 each
   6-11 off   £155.00 each
   12+   £135.00 each

Why don’t you place an advert on the forum and organise a group buy. We all want to save money, plus I believe it will benefit you (Williamson pumps) in the long run.

What do you need to do to modify the backpacks for WFP use, i.e. pole, brush attachment?

Hi Central Cleaners

If you buy a Shureflo backpack, you will need a hozelock connector, the one that screws to a tap, two normal hose connectors and a short length of hose. Very easy to set up.

hello all,

we supply two types of backpack systems the first is a pump up type and the second is the re-chargeable style which will give you around 400-500ltrs per charge.

they are priced very reasonably and are available from us at www.skypolesystems.com

the hose can quicklock to any pole so it would be okay for an add on to save pulling out mtrs and mtrs of hose.

regards,
stuart@ skypole systems

Hi Andrew I know what you mean, I bought my Merlin from the states when they were in the £500-£600 range in this country great I thought it cost me about £175 expected carriage to be in the region of about £80 it actualy cost me over £200 in carriage and duty, still a good deal but what a shock to the system, the best was that it took just over a day and a half to get to me over 4,000 miles (can the post office beat that/)
of the thread a bit but I recently orderd a couple of items from williams pumps 3.30pm on day one they arrived 7.30am day two... pretty good..

As regards to people triping over the hose I use Yellow ballards (from screw fix) and put them on the foot path to mark the hose quick easy and gives you some kind of cover.

Well ive heard it all now. If people are going into this industry with ideas like above then I think they should find another business to run. As with any equipment for any outside job insurance, risk assesments, method statements would be done. I think if people are going to be scared of using their equipment because they are scared the public will trip and fall then they haven't quite worked out how they are going to run a window cleaning business and presume they are doing it to make a quick buck. I started my business two years ago and went straight to wfp in van I dint have any money and took out a business loan, and have never had a problem with trailing hoses etc as ive carried out all necessary risk procedures so it cant happen.
