Public - Urinals - Toilets - Smells
« on: April 02, 2010, 11:09:25 am »
Hi lads & ladettes,

We have a large contract where there are about 20 blocks of toilets. In each toilet block there are a total of 20 toilets and urinals. Some are the porcelaine an some are the stainless steel type

We don't normally do the toilets on this contract as it was not part of the original contract. However they have had a large number of complaints.

They are being cleaned by another large company. I wont mention who.

We were approached to see if we could offer a remedy for the smells. These toilets are in constant use 24 hours a day. And get used by many many people I hazzard to guess but it will be several hundred easily in each block. Possibly near to 800 - over a 1000 a day. They are very busy places to say the least.

We can get the blocks closed while we perform a deep clean.

They also want the grout to be cleaned as well.

Now without trying to sound rude or annoy anyone Please except my appologies in advance it is not intended.

I need advice from someone who deals with large contracts on a similar basis. That understands the problem we have been asked to resolve.

We all know on here how to clean toilets,  but this is slightly different from an office block used by 10 - 50 people or so.

We are dealing with a large amount of continual use. Thats a lot of urine / amonia build up. We need to eliminate the smells that you get in public toilets.

I have booked a couple of appointments with some suppliers that say that they have the right chemicals.

I await your responces in anticipation. And thanks for reading.

If those Toilets are used 24/7 then U need cleaner at least 20/7 ....
Simple example!!!!
McDonalds..... at least 4 toilets every restaurant(thats how is in my City) 100 or even 1000s people in one day using those toilets... but there is also full time cleaner-cleaning all day! No problems at all

Tats how I see that.... Split your cleaning hours for example like that
7am
13pm
19pm
1am WOW

Less smells and les compaints -

Bartoz,

Thanks for the reply,

I agree with you totally. They already have a cleaning company doing the toilets frequeantly. I have to assume the standards are poor.

We are looking at various ways, mor cleaning and chemicals that fight the urine, lock in the smell even possibility of having the pipes cleaned thouroghly.

The smells are quiet bad to say the least. Mcdonalds toilets are very good compared to these sites

Hi Derek,

Yes we have many clients that have no water urinals. They do run a a bare minimum amount of water.

However there are special urinal cleaners you can obtain to break the urine down and it keeps the pipes fgrom clogging

We found the best way to try and stay on top of the smell is to spray all pipework from urinals regular with spray with bleech from Seldon, these pipe usually are leaking. We also use a special toilet cleaner, name escapes me at the mo...age!! you can use this as a floor cleaner,as well, something you need to do regular is underneath the urinals..due to people missing ??
In the end put urinal blocks in them. Regular cleaning is the only way to keep on top of it really.

These problems may not just be down to the cleaning. The pipework is usually leaking and this dowm to the amount of times its taken apart to clear blockages - waterless urinals are said to cure this but the chemical block and the special spray must both be used correctly if they are to stand a chance. I have only come across these at the Duke of Yorks school at Dover and the main issues is training the cleaners to use chemicals correctly as apparently water should'nt be used - I am still on the fence.
The other issue is the plumbing of the auto flush, they sense the water pressure fluctuations and may be plumbed into the cold and most people will use the hot if at all ! These units are adjustable and it may help to turn them up.
