People ask "what do you do?".  "I'm a window cleaner"........Blank....They don't know what to make of it!  Is it good?  Is it bad?  They don't know.. We're a mystery.

Since I do so much commercial, I get to know a lot of retail managers.  I go to the movies for free...free food, coffee...deep discounts on clothes and shoes...barter for haircuts or other services...the nice ladies at Avalon Spa keep offering me pedicures and other spa treatments.

Yes we are. We see peoples homes in way that is acceptable but in a way that no other sees. How many people can look though every window into a persons home and it be ok?

Or, if you are doing the insides of a persons house, you just walk into every bedroom without a thought?

How many people can look through the bedroom window when doing the outsides? None except a window cleaner. That's unique and I don't mean in a pervey sense.

In terms of a tradesman, a window cleaner is different to almost any other trade in that we are inherantly trusted, we see the lives of our customers on plain view, and every aspect of their home without a second thought from the customer.

Name any other trade that see's what we see and with the customer not bothered about it and on a regular basis?

Got a point there!  We see through every window.

And they are trusting, aren't they?  The last residential I did, the lady came to me and said: I know you're wandering through the house, so I just want to warn you that I'm taking a shower.

So, I made sure to keep from that part of the home...but golly, would you ever do that?

....like the new customer who was going out in a minute so gave me the keys to the house so I could do the bedroom windows that overlooked the conservatory from the inside, and then post the keys through the letterbox.

or the numerous customers that have their inside windows cleaned.

It is an amazing job.

I've only been at it a few months, and it's about 80% of my work, [I'm registered with the Inland Revenue as a "Self Employed Handyman"].

I was talking to another local handyman the other week, and he said, "Couldn't do window cleaning - what's so good about it?"

My reply?

The same as for those that ask me why I've ridden motorcycles for 44 years.

"If you have to ask, I don't think that you will be able to understand the answer".

For me its the freedom , I got custody of my daughter and was working 12 hour shifts each night, couldn't do it because of school run etc so thought about window cleaning, that was back in March left my job in May have a WFP and the rest is history. 

Also its amazing how quickly people trust there window cleaner.

When I was door knocking there was a bungalow laid right back out of view of the road, knocked on the door and this old lady about 90 shuffled to the door and was going to open it. 
I actually told her not to open it as she doesn't know who I am, so we talked through the letterbox and I gave her a flyer.  People are so trusting.....

I have been a bit of a dog in the past, I mean, you really do get to know the ones that are up for it don't you?They make it plain enough. I don't do that anymore though. Things get too complicated, anyway I was single then. I'm now 62 and married to a 28 year old Indonesian girl Who helps me on the round. watching her wield a knife when she cleans fish, pheasants etc puts the fear of God into me.
It's great not having to take any crap from anyone.
I think I should have been a social worker though, It's stange how female customers will tell you about the most intimate details of their life after you have only known them a couple of months.
You can source allmost any thing I need from your customers. I had one bloke offer me 2 viagra to clean his windows. I don't do his windows now, but the way I'm shaping lately I think I'll have to look him up. Dai

I like not having to iron uniform, go away to countries that make Geordie-land look posh and live in a prison like evironment for six months of the year.

I miss the paid holidays though...

Being your own boss (well out of the house at least   :)

Working outside. Great in the summer (everyone thinks the tan is from an exotic holiday). Even in winter it's enjoyable if you can keep your hands warm.

Beats sitting in an office wishing you're outside in the sun.

Great ..untill her indoors catches on
 then start early, work as long as possible and come home to a list of jobs to be done.

Great life though better than running pubs (no black eyes on a friday night)
