Just a thought, tds readings change depending on the temperature of the water. So a reading of 5 in the winter will be more like 20 in the summer. My resin had been spent a while back and I didn't bother changing it, the reading was only 2, if I heated the water it would jump to about 15, I didn't get any spotting whatsoever.
However changed my resin so that the reading is now 0 and also 0 when the water is heated, still no spotting but the cleaning power is so much better. You may be able to clean at 2, 5 or 20 ppm with out spotting but 000ppm will always give much better cleaning power meaning getting rid of stubborn marks much faster and easier.
