interviewing staff... in their home?
« on: March 02, 2010, 05:35:49 pm »
i read a lot on here that people interview staff in their own home as then you get to see how they treat their place and get a better feel for the person. i'm was talking to family members about this and all thought it sounded wrong and have got me doubting myself that this is how it's done. wondered what everyone's thoughts were on this? if not their home where else? rent a room at a hotel? local starbucks?

also when taking on a new domestic clean that you can't do yourself do you tell the customer there is possibly a waiting period of say 2 weeks whilst you find staff to do the job? we have one that no one can do as it's just a little too far to go weekly, but are in process and finding more staff which could take a while before we get right staff. is this normal?

many thanks all

Interveiwing at home, their home I would say that this is the normal.

I know full well that Minster Cleaning yes the big franchise does this exact thing "Interveiws them at home".

Although I think its a good idea and yes if the place is clean then I would say they would do a good job. But I also know I have staff that their cleaning is "fantastic" but their home is a complete mess. They dont have the time to clean it. so they tell me.

As for interviewing at starbucks well thats down to you, We use an office that we rent. Or you could rent a room "An office room" You can rent them by the hour. Have a look for virtual offices in your area. They even greet memebers in your company name, bring tea and coffee, supply fax, email etc.

Also as for covering work until you find a cleaner, this is perfectly normal I have found this with many companies.

I have interviewed many people for many positions over the years and one thing I would say is never interview at either the applicants' home or your own (if used as your office).

It is just not professional.

One exception would be if you already know the applicant. In this case an informal interview at their home is fine. The other of course being if the position is for a vacancy at your home.

Job Centre Plus (JC+) will let you use one of theirs for free, I guess that you will have to be interviewing candidates id'd via JC+ though.

Worst case rent somewhere for half a day.

Hi, I've interviewed all my staff in their homes and i personally don't see any problem with this, yes you do get to see what their home, but i also think they are more at ease in their own home.
Suppose it's personal choice really but if your only interviewing a few people then the cost of hiring somewhere maybe a little too much, and if none of the applicants are suitable your back to square one...Pauline

Many companies interveiw applicants in their own home. Even large companies. Like I said previously Minster Cleaning do this. Well they do in my area. Thats a FACT.

Also it has some pro's to it. If its a Key Holding position then you know where to go and get the keys if they dont turn up.

You dont need to rent half a day they do it by the hour on virtual offices. But if there is a draw back if they want to pop in on the off chance and ask for you, and you are not their or they recomend a collegue and pop in what will they think?

I interview staff either in their home or at a local coffee shop, whichever is most convenient for me.  I prefer to go to their home for obvious reasons but sometimes I'm too busy to drive round 3 or 4 people so its easier if I meet them one after the other at a coffee shop near me.

Either way, I treat the interview as a chance to get to know the person and whether you would like them to represent your company.  The interview is only the beginning though as two weeks of training really gives you an idea of whether they have the attention to detail and consistency that's needed, especially in the domestic marketplace.

Cheers

IF your comfortable interviewing in public or other peoples homes that is a personal choice.

Regardless of where the interview is held, you do need to ensure that you comply with the current legislation regarding the interview process, not forgetting discrimination etc.
