here is a template for hot washers.

has anyone got a cold washer one?

Example Health and Safety Risk Assessment

This example of a typical risk assessment is intended as a guide only.

Risk Assessment: The operation of a Hot Water Pressure Washer

Identify the Hazard:
There could be a risk of bodily injury
There could be a chemical hazard if it is used
There could be respiratory irritants due to chemicals
Possibility of faulty electrical equipment
Hazard of electric shock
Possibility of eye injury
Danger of a fire
High temperature hazards
High voltage hazard
Hot Liquid hazard
There are hot surfaces
There is hot water
Lone working could occur
There may be a noise hazard
There could be scolding to the skin
There could be a skin irritant
There could be sparks
There may be spillages of fuel, chemicals or water
There could be hot splashing
There could be steam
There is a tripping hazard
There is a wet floor

Who may be harmed? ----- The Operator or people nearby

How is the risk controlled?
Keep the area clear of non essentials
Avoid loose clothing
Avoid trailing leads if possible
Place barriers to restrict access
Ensure that the operator is a competent person
Check that electrical equipment is fit for the purpose
Do electrical safety checks
Eye protection must be worn
Good house keeping observed
Portable appliance testing carried out
PPE to be used
Pre-start check undertaken
Protective gloves to be worn when chemicals applied
RCD circuit breakers to be used
Routine maintenance put in place
Routine safety check undertaken

Estimated Risk Factor:

Likelihood of accident. (1 to 10) ---------------------- 3

Likely severity of injury(1 to 10) ---------------------- 3

3 x 3 = 9

Therefore Risk level:-------------------------------- Medium

What further action is to be taken:-

Control Measure
Safety Training for operator (Supervisor by 16/11/2007)
Reduce tripping hazard with hose reel (Supervisor by 16/11/2007)
Provide PPE for operator (Supervisor by 16/11/2007)
Place warning signs in position (Supervisor by 16/11/2007)
Use only approved chemicals (Supervisor by 16/11/2007)
Start maintenance Program (Maintenance Manager by 16/11/2005)

If you are getting enough requests it would be better to just bite the bullet and get some done for you.

That way at least you own them and you know that they are smack bang up to date.

If the contract is worth enough then why cut corners on the prep work?

Does the method statement and risk assessment that you are sending represent your business as well as it ought to do??

Only you can answer that question. If the answer is yes then you are running a low key set up that will struggle to move forward. what that says to me is this has had very little effort put into it.

If the answer is no then you need to improve it.

In all areas you need to make sure that you are sending out the right message, you might be the best pressure washer the world has ever seen but the example says that there has been very little thought in presentation and content and if that is all the effort that you have put into a fundamental of the initial process then is your work going to be any better.

My risk assesment & method statements is around a £3000.00 template.

It has tables, photos and a lengthy method statement.

I work for Sainsburys and rarely offer additional RAs & MSs but I would certainly offer more than you are offering.

DS - I don't want to cut you down but you can offer more than that and I hope this will be constructive criticism.

Well said Rob.

So many people seem to think that a RA, MS etc are just things you have to do as an afterthought and that you can just stick any old thing in and it will suffice.

These policies, however tedious you may find them are legally required and essential for your insurance etc... if you have an accident or cause any damage and they are not spot on, you will have problems getting your insurance company to pay out and you could end up in court.

I am NOT being overdramatic as I personally know someone this happened to .  Don't underestimate the importance of getting these things right.  If you can't be bothered to get them done right to win a contract then stick to cleaning drives and don't bid for it.

I used to work for a company which installed trace heating, we worked on many major projects in london including t5 at heathrow, refurb of grovesnor hotel, unilevers headquaters etc, the risk assesment and method statements do not have to be over the top just make sure you cover all angles and comply with h&s regs, if your unsure phone h&s safety they will be more than happy to help you.
It really doesnt have to be over the top but must be relevant to what your doing for example it doesnt need to include high level works if your cleaning round an office block.
Its a bit different for m-clean as from what i gather his works are everything from store roofs to chewing gum removal so his needs to cover all angles.
Mainly its common sense, hope it goes well for you.

I have basic generic RA and MS but these need to be site specific to be worth the paper their written on - the generic ones just demonstrate to the customer that before you pitch up on site that you understand the basics of what they need. RA's are done with no control measure in place and I have a very simple table that I use to judge the risks and these may change from day to day ie rain may make surfaces slippery. There is no hard and fast way they should be done but you need to demonstrate you know how to conduct the job safely in respect of yourself and others. I'd post my form if I knew how to :'(

i have got it all sorted by my new health and safety consultant.

i would advise anyone to get checked as there is so much to learn and keep up to date with.

you wont be able to fart soon without a risk assessment.  :'(
