adverts in local paper?
« on: February 18, 2010, 08:38:12 pm »
Picked up the local rag the other week, and under the adverts section, there was a window cleaning company advert.

They are a massive company up here, not much need to advertise to be honest?

but, what is the general opinion on advertising in the paper?

Cheers

There are adverts to look for more Business. Then there adverts which the big companies use call strengthen there presence or brand in the market its a type of dominance adverts.

As a means of getting more work its next to useless.  You pay a fortune, the ad goes in for one issue then the paper goes in the bin.  Better off putting an ad in Yellow Pages, at least it's there for a year and people don't chuck them in the bin till the new one comes out.

I have actually picked up a few customers from my free advert in yellow pages.
Did get a bit fed up of them constantly calling tho to sell me a bigger listing.

Made me think my listing is at the bottom with the other free listings, Why are they not calling the big adverts and calling me?

Obviously paying a big price to Yp might not be worth it.  ;D

They get big by doing it right, constantly, persistently and sticking to there business and marketing plans. Success breeds success and being prepared to change what is not working.

Sorry Ian but I have to disagree with you over yellow pages being the best form of advertising,    it may have been 10 years ago but people have much less and less use for a yellow pages.

I'm currently in 2 editions of the yellow pages and the response has been really poor but at least I gave it a try.

I run a box ad in my local paper from March to December which costs around £25 per week which has brought some nice work in but my biggest success has been Parish mags.

Funny thing is my biggest monthly contract ( 2 day job )  I got by the estate manager driving past my house one day last summer and took my details of the van and called me so a sign written van is also a great way.

STEPHEN S - yes have to agree parish mag has been very good for me - but i think that depends on the area you live in - we are rural and the communities are close knit - in fact if you live more than a couple of miles outside the village they will not use you! ( think you are for another planet!)

sign written van has also produced more work
