Aquarium heater float, any suggestions please
« on: February 08, 2010, 05:23:41 pm »
Hi, i dont want to fully submerse it in my tank, and i also fill it with the ro overnight,

can anyone suggest a float i can put at the top of the heater so the electrical cable stays out of the water as it fills up?

i thought of polystyrene but that would burn, wood will also singe or burn, plastic will melt.... lol

Help please  ;)

He wants to heat the water at all levels without submurging the heater totally.
Ok I've had a think, you need two floats connected together with a connecting bar, fasten the heater to the connecting bar, if the floats are round, the  connecting bar must be round. and the heater attached with a ring, then if the floats turn the heater will remain hanging down.
Just put a stop each side of the ring to keep the heater away from the floats.

But if you cant submerge it then its not an aquarium heater. If its not intended to be submerged dont put it ANYWHERE near water.

Otherwise drop it in and away you go, aquarium heaters are meant to be submerged  ??? ??? ??? ???

Matt not all aquarium heaters are designed to be fully submerged, the one in my tropical fish tank has a maximum water level and a minimum water level.

Matt do you use a shurflo pump? just wondering as I am looking at getting a fully submersable heater for my tank, just wondering if it might screw up the pump.

quality of the diaphram comes to my mind Matt. dont want it perishing.
I know cheaper pumps will use cheaper rubber and we all know rubber and heat dont go very well.

Matt I bought that 3KW pond heater and it worked well, the water was piping hot, steaming in the tank and no problems with umps, not that Im aware of anyway.

But..... the heater all of  a sudden started fusing the whole of the houses electrics. I got a refund on it (seems the cap on the top where the cable fees into it started leaking water) and have decided to go down the L5 route. My L5 is stuck somewhere up some customs officers jacksie I believe. It has at least made it to the UK but since landing Ive not heard a thing. Im still waiting and have been for far too long!  :-[

Use a plastic float. If its attached to the heater at a point below the water line it will never get hot enough to melt. My 500W heater is touching the bottom of my tank,.. it hasn't done any damage at all,.. not even made a mark.

Sorry to ressurect this old post, but i am thinking ahead to winter ::)

i never tried any of the suggestions, as i need a float that will allow the heater to eventually end up through the open hole (lid)...on my ibc

so as the water fills overnight, the aquarium heater rises, and end up, when full ish, out of the hole in the top.
