Hi,iv`e just got a merlin ro unit but unfortunaly i live in a hard water area,
I know there a so many different ways to soften the water ie filters ,magnets,electric currents, etc
the one that i know does not need to be replaced are the magnets that fit round the main water inlet pipe to the house,
does anyone else use a softener if so can you advise,

check taht with the supplier of merlin before using eletromagnetic units; i know from other R/O suppliers that the state of the water molecules are chaged and it could result in your R/O membranes being damaged; best would be with a small water softner unit, the resin inside only needs to be washed with slat to regenerate.

Just bought my water softener, checked the hardness with the test kit and it reads 320ppm.

On the test bottle it gives these indications:-

1) 0-100ppm= No action.
2) 100-300ppm= Scale inhibitor recommended.
3) Over 300ppm= Install water softener.

As far as I've read the electrical ones don't remove anything from the water I wouldn't like to say if they will reduce the hardness or not.

As these type are semi-cheap may be an idea to get a test kit see what the hardness is then fit one of the inhibitor type and see if it reduces the hardness. If not you've not spent alot of money for nothing.
I just risked it and bought a whole house water softener, just got to sort out the waste then the big switch on!.

All these filters,pre filters ,post filters ,test kits,tds meters,i hope it`s worth it,because it`s draining my pocket,but im 95% there so i ain`t going to give up,i`ll hopefully be up and running in about a week.

Round here it's all 3 storey so may as well go straight into the WFP.
Then I read up on everything, it's alot of work and money to get pure water.
Whats really bad is we drink normal tap water no problem, but to clean windows or cars we want pure water.

Somethings not right somewhere

lol  you are so right,we are spending so much money to clean windows and will drink water straight from the tap,iv`e yet to taste my filtered water it better be nice,if it`s good enough to clean windows with it better be amazing to drink

Talking to a rep from the leading resin manf in the world and was told water softeners are very beneficial to ro systems but not to di systems .GET ONE AND BE THE FLAVOUR OF THE MONTH WITH YOU MRS:softer hair/and better skin.

WHAT THE INTEREST IN WATER SOFTENERS ALL OF A SUDDEN?
I posted on here several months ago about water softeners,to which hardly anyone replied.

Has the pebble finally hit the water at the bottom of the well or what?

MY theory at the time was if soft water produces less wear and tear on the filters and produces purer water.then a water softener would be beneficial,to which I carried on with my research,and now the hamsters awoken in its wheel for some of you.

For those who has gone down the water softener route please post your results on the forum for the benefit of other ro users [and myself who maybe going over to ro system from di system] but one thing Ive found out is water softeners is of little benefit to di systems.

I'm new to all of this just looking into setting up on my own, no experience so bear with me.
I had no idea you had already posted on water softeners.
I have done the same as you looked at all the information which is why I went for the water softener, to protect the RO unit when I make up my mind and see which one I want!
When I get the softener up and running will post a reply.
Are you in Nottingham? I'm sure I saw a post from you and you mentioned Notts?
Just curious I lived and worked there for many years!
