they are quite easy to put together,i just need to do all the pipe work,i only got it today, they are an on demand ro unit so no need to keep it running you can quite easily fill up for the day,in an hour,i think! ;D

When you have an RO unit that supplies pure water on demand in a hard water area, does it cost a lot more in resin or is there a way around that?

Shiner,

I'm just looking into this myself, from the information I have gathered, the hard water will cause the membranes to not last as long.
I was told for example that if you had hard water the membranes may last 2 years, if you feed the ro with soft water then they may last 5 years.Obviously depending on how much you use it.

I was also told that although the merlin can run at low water pressure it is better to have it as high as possible, So as to avoid lots of water being flushed away.
Also been told you still need to have a DI after the merlin.

The upshot is how much to replace resin and membranes as oppposed to buying a water softener and toppping it up with salt(although the softener will benefit the whole house pipework, less shampoo soap, better for washing machines and dishwashers etc)
Hope this helps

Cheers Ian

I have a merlin R/O unit and have at the end a small resin tank, we are in a quite hard water area the ppm reading at the tap is 665 the product water (pure water) is after going throught the merlin by 18 ppm, this is not good enought for wc therefore the resin tank. I reckon it should (resin) be good enought for about 3 months work before needing changing,18 ppm to zero is hardly anything for the rsin to purify.

Woodley Washers,

How long does it take to fill say a 25litre container from the Merlin?

Thought it may slow the water down going through the RO. Is there alot of waste?

Do you have a booster pump from the incoming mains to increase the pressure I have been told there is much less waste when you do this even though the Merlin will operate at low pressure.

Cheers Ian

Hi,

To work out how long your resin will last, the calculation is simple.

Litres of resin in demin tank x 22,727 divided by the TDS of the water going in to demin tank = no of litres of water which the tank will handle before the resin needs changing.

So, to give a worked example, if your demin tank has 10 litres of resin, and the TDS of the water from your Merlin is 18, you'll need to change the resin after you've produced about 10 x 22,727/18 = 12630 litres of water.  This is the problem with the Merlin.  If your tap water TDS is very low, and you don't use much water, it's great - if not, resin and waste water costs can be astronomical.  It's a great new machine, and we sell it in the right set of circumstances, but each case should be considered on its merits.

Yours, Andrew
