WCW Backpack problem ???
« on: January 18, 2010, 04:52:24 pm »
Having used the WCW backpack for about 8-10 months with no problems, I now have one...lol, a problem I mean. The backpack is continually running when switched on. The pump/motor used to stop once it was up to pressure and would only run once the flow valve was opened on the pole hose. Now it continually runs even when the flow valve is closed and no water running. There are no leaks on the system and the battery is fully charged.

Anyone else had this??.  Not sure whether to get a new pump  (where ??), or is there something to be adjusted/mended inside the pump housing.

Many Thanks

Got in too late to contact WCW  :(

@ Window Wipers.

Yes, I had an idea that this could possibly be the problem. Is there any way to fix ??/New pump/ or just swallow it and buy another for how much they cost ??

thanks for your input

done a search and got this link to maplins http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=6453 you need to change the connectors over.

I changed a shurflo pressure switch and it was easy. just dont loose the spring.

Hi m8, thanks for the link...ok, now all the q's...lol

The pump in the backpack is obviously an enclosed unit. Is this device inside it ??. I took the backpack apart to day and took the black plate (held on by 5 screws) off the top of the pump to show a white plate which had two tiny cog type items at one end (both could be removed). One of these had a spring which sat on it and pushed upwards into the plate (black) I had just taken off.  Am I anywhere near it...lol   Your gonna wish I never asked  lol.

thanks for your patience

Fieldsy

also, bit miffed by this,

Q- Are these switches suitable for outdoor use? i.e waterproof.

Answer- These are not suitable for outdoor use.

If you do think of replacing look at RED HAT DIVING on e bay they have spare pumps that will fit and I think they also sell a back pack that looks like the WCW one cheap.

Thanks Wizard, I've searched the forum for info on a pressure switch for a WCW backpack but can't find anything........so it might have to be a new pump ???   Do you know that these pumps by RED HAT DIVING fit the WCW Backpack.

thanks

Ring wcw tomorrow and ask them about a pressure switch for the pump in the backpack. Surely they should have something or do you a deal on a pump seen as though its not even a year old yet

Well, took the pump to bits and the pressure switch is nothing like the maplin type/surflo type  :( :(
Rang WCW and they are sending a new pressure switch as its only 7 months old.......................................but just to cover myself in case it was the pump breaking aswell, managed to pick up this little baby today for £27 from a local boat/chandlery shop, fitted it in and everything working fine,

http://marinestore.co.uk/PL53431.html

The pump in the backpack was 70psi, this one is 65psi, but notice no difference and it has a flow of 3 L/pm wheras the old one was 2.6 L/pm.

Anyone looking for another source for pumps rather than the norm of wc suppliers try chandlery shops  ;) ;)

So when the pressure switch turns up I will have a spare pump for the back pack..........assuming it was just a faulty pressure switch. Thanks for all your input, Up and running again  ;D ;D ;D

hi
guys

thanks for the tips on pumps.

I have wcw back pack think it's great made some modifications to hose's fitings.

even with hozlelock with tap i don't find it slows the flow down at all really.

Was thinking is this a silly idea that won't work :D

Idea is of fitting a light dimmer switch in base of back pack and poking out twisty dial through spare hole in base corner.

will this work? dimmer switch would connect to battery to increase/decrease power from bettery to pump.

am i mad :D (yes)

sorry know nothing really in general ;D
