I'm back home after a busy morning at work... filling my own return out now....groan :'(
I absolutely hate this time of year, although as I've left an overpayment with the tax man (rather than claim the rebate) I'll have £1200.87 deducted from my bill this year, so hopefully won't have to find too much more...I hope! :-\

Yes as long as it is customs related. They have the power to enter and search without notice or warrant for one thing.

And, if they think you're mucking them around and don't respond to them, they can use 'Determination'. That is, they determine what they think you must earn and that goes down as your earnings and you have to pay the tax on that with no appeal.

Dont you do your books straight after april 5th every year... done and dusted then,

as soon as that date comes, i get them away to the accountant .... otherwise if i left it this late i know i would go over the deadline....

but by doing them in april , no pressure.

This is what i plan to do in april when its due, work it out and pay it then its out the road and i know where i stand, why others dont is beyond me.

hm customs are the worst people around,  they can just walk in and claim everything they want,  they only bring the police so if you kick off u can be arrested

they are the one gov dept you dont want to p!ss off

Yeah right. Only because people just shut up and pay up.

If you take it to court it then it has to be proved. Innocent until proven guilty in this country.
Ask an accountant or a solicitor. That's fact. ;)

What? Accept it if they told me what i earned?  ???
Of course not, it would become a legal matter and have to be proven.
It happens quite a lot. More people should do it, but most people poop themselves and pay up.

If it's between you and them maybe, but as soon as you take it legal the law of the land stands.

yes but if they take you to court they will want to know everthing , everything you spend on your kids wife yourself , i herd they can even look at a petrol receipt and if you bought a mars bar or somthing small like that on the receipt , they want to know were you got the money for it and check it all out.

they will always find something .

It goes up to some comissionares, Very rarely it goes to law and then only as a test case.
Most situations and almost anything you can think of would already have a test case. These test cases may have been sixty years ago but they still stand. So long as a relevant test case can be cited you have no recourse to law.Your right to appeal is with these commissionares.

That was the thing about the mps expenses scandal, under the rules that we get looked at these people would have been in a world of trouble. Some peoples tax affairs are very complex and an inquiry can go on for years. I read gordon ramsesy's book and he mentions this, he has a business (restaurants), but he also earns money in his own right as a tv person. When the tax man asks, who payed for that flight to america? it can be a head scratcher.
