low water production?
« on: January 12, 2010, 04:40:11 pm »
hi folks,i have a 200gpd ro and up until the last week as been working fine making about 25 ltrs an hour but the last few days its only producing about 6 ltrs an hour which is not enough to cover my daily work, ive had it for a year now and have not yet changed the membranes or filters could this be the cause in the drop of water production,i know water production slows in the cold but such a drop surely cant be right, any ideas guys ???

I would start off by changing the pre filters is this is nearly always why water production slows down.
this weather does slow down the production a lot I am shocked myself how slow the water is today and I have a 4040

I got a 300 gpd and it takes roughly an hour and twenty mins to make 25 litres(timed it today for first time and it took just under 7 mins to do 2 litres, for saying its supposed to do 1135.5 litres a day(if US gallons) or 1363.8 litres if Uk gallons,I cannot see how they get these GPD figures  ??? . that makes it over 56 hours to produce 300 gallons(US) and over 68 hours if UK gallons(and thats when I made it 3 minutes per litre for easier reckoning!).Do they include waste water in the 300 GPD figure?

You will probably have to change the pre-filters and the membranes as it sounds like the membranes are wrecked.  Check the TDS immediately after the RO if you can.  You will probably find that this has climbed sharply too.
As a rule of thumb, pre filters should be changed half yearly if they are 20".  I think that 10" ones are quarterly.  Some people suggest a bit more frequently than this for both but I've never had a problem doing it half yearly (I have 20" ones).
In future, change those pre filters when you're meant to and the (more expensive) membranes will last a lot longer - several years probably.

strange one this. its a recommendation that you change them every six months but my pre filters have lasted a yr, i have changed them 3 times in the last 5yrs and i am producing pure water at 000 without using a di vessel. tds at the tap fluctuates between 157-280ppm
so many factors contribute though because we have unbelievable water pressure here  ;D

You are very lucky then.  Before I got a bit more clued up, I once wrecked some membranes by leaving the pre filters for about 9 or 10 months.

it is all because of the cold weather, i get this problem every year, my 2x 150 gpd system normally makes 1000 litres in 12 hours, but now its struggling to make it in 24-30 hours, the only way round it is to get extra tanks so you can stock pile water before the cold weather sets in

 ;)
Or you could upgrade your RO with another membrane which will also help. We have a 450GPD and this will just do the 2 of us during the winter. I usually fill my van (650l) on Sunday morning to make sure that we are on top of things for the following week.

its going to be the pre filter, especially the sediment filter, they get blocked with debris

the carbon filter getting worn out will not slow the flow down, it will just not take away the clorine ( which will inturn eat the membranes )

the RO membrane when on the way do not slow down, the TDS just rises

so everything points to the  sediment filter being full
