Very good. I have a pair and swear by them.

However, before Christmas my ladders slipped away from me when I tried to get down from a flat roof. They are good but not foolproof!
(and I use the full set)

That's interesting.

Where the limpets in place when you first climbed onto the roof, mate?

Yep, went up no problem but when I climbed back on the ladder (close to the top) away they went. Once your weight gets very close to the contact point then they won't work so well. Slippery surface but no ice. Quite suprised really because I felt invincible using them up to that point.

Thats the problem, they can obviously lead you into a false sense of security.

I cant see how can they stop a ladder from slipping in the conditions we are all experiencing at the moment by leaning a piece of metal on the ground that is attached to the ladder. I see it obviously clamps itself on by the weight of the person on the ladder but all it'll do is offer a little more stability which doesnt necessarily equate to grip (particularly when theres an inch of ice underneath the clampet)

omg have you really only got it on one side of the ladder?!?!?

complete false sense of security, that ladder will slip and twist and you will end up in a wheel chair!

and why are you resting your ladders on the sill with ladder mits?

i'd be embarressed if i posted that video up!

I jumped back on the roof pretty quick and luckily had a few feet of ladder above the gutter line to keep hold of them. Trouble then is trying to reposition them from the top - every time you tug the ladder upright the limpets readjust to the wrong angle. Got down in the end with the ladders very near vertical.
Still say they are a brilliant design as long as you don't expect miracles. I never go up a ladder without them.

it would be better with one on each side of ladder as the way your using it one side could still slip and ladder would twist and fall
better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove any doubt

I admire the guy for putting the video up because what its done is to bring the guy's together on here who use the limpet.

Maybe we can all see the error of using Just the one limpet but its Jogged my memory as to the only time I had a problem using mine and that was on slippy wet welsh slate, even going 3 rungs up my ladder it began to slide backwards but I'm talking real slippy stuff because even with the limpet on I had someone foot my ladder and with me being up the ladder it began to push the persons feet back to, so when that happens its time to leave that type of window because no safety device can give you 100% security 100% of the time.

All in all though the ladder limpet is as easy to put on and take off as the guy showed in his video.

I have 2 sets of them and even the inventor Ian Menelaus didn't realise they could be used the way I did as a double set and that was one set fitted as usual and I installed the second set further up the ladder onto a pitched roof,  this enabled me to do windows and guttering above this type of roof because that ladder wasn't going any where, if anyone wishes to see? I have a piccy somewhere on my PC of both sets along with a stand off in use while I clean guttering.

At least the limpet never walks off when a mobile phone rings, unlike someone once did when footing my ladder for me  ::)

perhaps u had too much ladder up above the gutter when you tried to get back on the ladder and it tipped the bottom outwards ?

Jeff, i've often wondered if they could be adapted to rest on a conservatory roof if they had articulated feet. One set on the ground, another on the roof. Would get me nice and high and closer to the finials.
Do they still make limpets?

Yes they still make them  http://www.laddatec.com/

I think for a conny roof I would put a small plank across the joists to spread the load and to save any damage but I can't see why it wouldn't work.

I can't see how they can fail, even on an oil slick.Physics will not allow them to move.

You had to be doing something wrong for them to slip.

I have a set of these and admit that I never use them. I'm not as adept as the guy in the video. I use a thing called laddermate ( I think that's what it's called). Basically a bed of nails and it works brilliantly. I have to say though that I doubt any of these things were designed to be used in extreme conditions. I take the view ( and the financial hit) that if conditions are bad I don't work. Customers don't like it and I'll earn nothing from my hospital bed or my grave.

Clive, believe me when I tell you that they can and will slip on wet welsh slate and your ladder feet will be sliding to.
I've been going up and down ladders for years so I know how to set up a ladder and I know how to set up the limpet.
