Anti freeze and tm s
« on: January 05, 2010, 04:53:04 pm »
do people who use tm s put anti freeze through their machines at times like this or is it just a case of plenty of rads or alternative heating system and cover with duvets etc.

Regards

Richard

Anti freeze is a sure way of protecting your TM & hoses.  Other forms such as heaters can & do breakdown leaving your equipment unprotected.  I know that Simon Gerrard is going away for a couple of weeks so he is using anti freeze in his Titan.

Where does Simon keep his van? Is it alarmed? Does he have a dog?  ;)

I use greenhouse fan heaters in my vans, that way you keep the warm air moving and avoiding cold spots in the van. If you use antifreeze you would have to fill the header tank and run it through the pump, chemical pump, hoses and tools, and remember to flush it all out before starting work every morning.

Done it when I first brought it far too much fluffing about next morning. My demand system was a nightmare

Quilts will only keep in heat that's already there... not much good if you put them on something cold.  Further to that, if you cover something cold with a quilt  then put a heater in the van, the quilt will stop it getting warm!!

Antifreeze..... life's too short (and mornings too cold in winter) to spend an extra 30 mins at night and an extra 30 mins in the morning running it through and then thoroughly rinsing everything out again!!  Mug's game ::)

Sure if the machine is going to stand idle with a heater but nobody to keep a check on the heater day to day, then the antifreeze might be a good bit of insurance.

Heater all the way - easy and relatively cheap.  I use an 800w oil filled rad, keeps the air temp in the back of my van at around 16-20 degs depending on outside temp.  I was running it lower than that but one of my female QDs on the TM's solution outlet must have frozen and it drips now.
It's right at the outside edge of the van, and the TM stands between it and the heater so must have got cold there.  I run the heater up almost full now, nice and toasty :D

My van is insulated with fibreglass stuff like you have in the loft, on frosty mornings the roof is covered in frost apart from tiny little melted patches where heat gets out because of the roof beams :)

Totally agree Jim regarding the duvet.  A heater is a much better option.  As i said though regarding anti freeze its the ONLY option that is fool proof.  Electric heaters of any kind are only any good if there is power, if you have a power cut your up $hit creek without a paddle.

Just purge all your cleaning solution clear after your last job, just keep holding the trigger when your tank has run dry. It will bubble and splutter when the machine and pipework is clear.

Bring your containers into the house.

I have loads of equipment in my van and no heater and not had a problem, even with temps as low as - 7
