Not just needing a new 4040, but also van suspension.
« on: January 03, 2010, 04:29:45 pm »
Argh, what a month.

Just took the van out, crazy clunk sound. Turns out the front nearside spring has broken. Great. Need to call around for prizes.

Just after having to buy a new 4040 because it froze up.  :'(

Don't know where the money will come from.

springs are a lot cheaper than you may think, plus you can buy the tools to do the job yourself extremely cheap and its not that hard to do if your mechanically minded. what van is it?

It's a Citroen Berlingo 1997.

I do have the haynes manual, haven't checked yet how difficult it is.

Wow that's great. And you do not have to dismantle any suspension arms? Or does that depend on the car in question?

Any idea where I could buy the springs?

the usuall way to take one off is to jack the car/van up and take the wheel off, then you will have to disconnect the ball joint (usually on the bottom off the suspension joint) and also the track rod end (this is the steering rack and is usually in the middle but the the right slightly of the suspension) . then you simply undo the bolt in the engine bay on top of the suspension housing and the suspension will drop away, you then put the spring clamps onto the spring to take the tension off them and then undo the top bolt and the suspension will come apart, keep note of how it all goes as that is how you then put it back together, if you have the haynes manual it will tell you it all or you can search some forums and i will gaurantee there will be a step by step with pics somewhere.

Your van is like your wfp, you need to know how it works and when you do it will make life much easier and cheaper for you

Replaced the front springs on my vito 2 days ago. Offside spring broke, I am wondering if the cold weather is making them brittle as i also replaced the springs on my caddy the day before lol same spring too :(
The caddy springs were only £78 and the vito's were £89 so not too bad really.

No help now but carry less water by reducing the sizes of your jets.

it used to be a callback item on berlingo's, you will have "cups" on the top of them, it was poopereon idea of fixing the problem they knew about :(

they say you should replace them in pairs ( as the other side will be weaker and wear quicker )

mine cost me about 150 quid to replace the 1 side, it would have been 250 for the pair, but as the van is crap, i took the chance

you can buy the tool and the spring, but be carefull, as they need to be compressed alot on the berlingo

Just when it started to get cold I had my van in the garage, and mentioning the weather to the owner he said he'd be really busy if it got freezing because of all the springs breaking, something I wasn't aware of before, but it seems the freezing weather does make the metal more brittle.
He told me to take it really easy till the springs have worked a bit and the metal is more plyable.

Difficult if the first residential speed bump mountain is 10 meter away. Good tip though.

Cheapest quote I had was £235. I'm getting the RAC out as we speak to get me there.

Should not have to touch track rod arms or ball joints on most. Vehicles. Usually just a couple of bolts on the bittom of the leg and one on the top. Of the leg going through the top mount.£235 is a lot, and with basi' tools you should be able to do it yourself.

Either way, hope you4 luck changes mate. My van has thing after thing go wrong recently and put me back by a week then got it stuck in my road and snow.

Had to replace both springs on sons Peugoet Partner last winter. They both went within a week of each other. I notice the local motor factors stock them at half the dealer price. We also replaced both upper mountings that carry a bearing as well.
