How to quote for Oriental Rug
« on: June 10, 2005, 03:17:53 pm »
All,

Looking for a bit of pricing help!
VERY Well off customer asked for me to go and quote for a VERY expensive Oriental (£15,000+).

It is 12' x 10' colours not a problem to bleed tests. Alkaline bleeds, but Acid test stable.

Now I intend to do it and really take time, looking at taking most of a day to do, along with thorough drying at end of process.

Now what are your suggestions of pricing??

I told him I will need to speak with 'Manufacturer' to check for any 'issues' with cleaning prior to a written quotation, he seems quite happy to wait until early next week. Mentioned to him it will be somewhere in the region of £3.00 to £5.00 a square foot and he agreed that was reasonable.

So I am thinking somewhere in region of 350 to 600 for a damn good clean etc.

Thoughts??

what type of rug, are you dealing with here, what chemicals do you intend to use, and dont forget to pre vac, both sides for at least 30 mins a side before you clean, this alone will make a huge difference,

On the pricing issue, £350 seems fair

£500+

Take it away and then they would not know how long it took you.

Make sure your insurance covers this.

why take a risk. Send it to Franklins in Sheffield, let them take the risk and just put your cut on the top

Can't remove. Customer wants the piece done in situ.......

Can understand his insistence though. If I had something worth that, I would not want it leaving my home when there is no real need!

if he had a gold Rolex watch would he want the jeweller to come to his house to clean it,

because its so valuable that why it has to be done in a controlled Enviroment.

I dare say if he had one and wanted the jeweller to come out, no doubt he would expect to pay a premium!

If you want a service - to your own requirements, expect to pay for it!

At the end of the day, if this is what he wants, then he can have it - but he will also have to pay for it.

Making a quip about a watch is not much help and I would have expected more from a 'God'.........

good point paul.If you insisted the rug was taken away customer could well think you are not confident enough to carry out work on premises. And anyway when was the last time anyone pulled up a carpet and took it away to clean, people expect us to carry out work on site. :)

Lee.
I am sure the situation in such a case is, that your customer would claim off you and you are entitled to include Franklins or whoever in the claim, or in other words , pass the buck.

it was'nt a quip it was a comparison ::)

sorry if you did'nt find my answer helpful, but the point I was trying to  make was the customer knows what he wants, but does'nt know what he needs. as a proffessional its your job to educate him on whats best for his rug, if then he choses to have it done on his terms so be it.

Bye the way, I did'nt ask to be a god :-[ :-[

How much would Franklins Charge.

How much would it cost to get it there and back. Carriage Insurance etc

Good Idea but is it Practical

Mike I have to say your advice is spot on. I don't expect to have my Mercedes professionally serviced in my driveway and I would be concerned if someone suggested it, it's worth a lot more than £ 15000
Best Regards

Totally agree with Mike

Franklins have been in this business for over 100 years and would probably charge you around two hundred pounds, so you earn a great deal of money for rolling up, wrapping and returning the item.

Adrian

Surprised at this comment, as most people seem to expect me to take away rugs, particularly the wealthier ones.

I always remove rugs from site, but as this is a large rug you can clean on site, use plenty of blowers to dry. Either on or off site, you need to work with the client and if he insists rug stays then clean on site.

Mr. Bolton cleans rugs on site and if it good enough for him....

Paul.
It all sounds a little bit iffey, if the rug  is so valueable why are they allowing someone without a proven track record to even touch it, most rug work is by recomendation and unless it is very very big most people don't want it cleaned on site?
That word "oriental" could mean anything and if it is Afghan, it could be a wringkler, Morri Bokhara, the blue catcher thread  in the weave has been known to run and wick up. Do they know something you don't know?

I'd like to know more about the rug. Origin, construction, fibre, colour, age, condition. Also, who says it’s worth £15000. You need too be very clear in your mind what you have to deal with here. Some people have fanciful ideas about the value of their rugs. E-Mail me a photo and I'll try to ID it and give you a guide.

I'm not saying the rug is not worth that amount.

It could be a modern hand made rug, say 20 to 30 years old, and very fine. Assuming you will move it, be very careful. If you need to fold the rug do so with pile outside to prevent the weft threads from breaking. If you roll it, put a pole up the middle to stop it bending when you lift it. Before you take the rug away point out any damage that’s apparent, particularly the fringe. Certain types of fine Persian rug have bleached white fringe (warps) that will fall to pieces if you try to scrub it.

As for the cleaning. I would not recommend cleaning on site. It's likely to be quite mucky and need beating back and front to remove the grit and gravel.

Best of luck

Alan has it correct in that you shouldnt clean it on site, if you did how would you clean the back of it...... as almost all rugs should be immersed in some degree how could you ever clean a rug on site......If the client thinks the rug is worth 15,000 why would you only charge 2 or 3 hundred to clean it....... 10% of the article you are working on is a good reference........think if you had something worth 15,000 would you only spend 300 on it, i think not, neither do they.........
