500 psi pump maintenance - powrflite
« on: December 07, 2009, 05:23:34 pm »
How often do you service the 500psi pump on a powrflite 1085, or any 500 psi pump for that matter, and is it an easy job to do diy.

I've just  rebuilt my pump after 2 1/2 years use, just recently couldn't maintain pressure
above 250 Psi.
Found it very easy to do. There are 37 parts in total in the kits, various washers and seals,
new plunger piston and guides. Eccentric cam is another kit.
Get yourself a clean surface to work on, dismantle one side of the pump first, paying attention to
where everything comes from, rebuild in reverse order. It's not difficult.
When i switched on after the rebuild i couldn't believe how quite the pump was, it's barely audible
above the vac' motors.
Amtech recommend rebuilding at 500 hours, but mine must have done in excess of 2000 hours.
Found the problem was the poppet valves scaled up, normal descaling only works with the pump running all the time
as when not running the valves are shut.

Amtech sell them, or cleaning systems uk in Fife, if your way up north. I was quoted £200 for full service. I broke a main electrical plug and that cost me £35. so I would imagine the parts are very expensive. Saying that it is mostly o rings to replace so maybe not.

AJB.

Do you think the pump would last longer, between services in "soft" water areas?

These are the parts needed

7HRO21 Kit A   , 7HRO34 kit B , 7HRO40 Kit C = £144.25 inc'

Soft water must be better for the pump, from the point of scale build up.
My pump has done a lot of work over 2 1/2 years and now i know that descaling
will not work on the poppet valves unless the pump is running, hopefully that problem
won't arise again, but since my pump went 4 or 5 times as many hours as Amtech
recommend before rebuilding i can't really knock it.

AJB.

how do you know the pump needs rebuilt? Mine is turned up to 600 on the gauge, and when you open the trigger it drops to around 300. Is that ok, or is it fooked?

That shows that either the poppet valves are leaking slightly, ie some pressure lost
back into the inlet lines, this is what happened with mine.
Or there is a starvation problem on the inlet side of things, ie not enough water reaching
the pump for a good flow.
One flow problem i had with mine was that the pipe from the Perfect heat coils to the
heat exchanger was kinked, and restricting the flow.
It's not impossible that ther is an airlock somewhere in the system.
It might be worth de-scaling it first to see if there is any improvement.

How much heat do you get a the wand from the perfect heat CFR?  Do you have a seperate inline heater?

How did you get the Eccentric bearing off?
I have tried putting an allen key in and whacking it with a hammer but doesn't seem to want to undo!!!

Position the bearing with the hex key hole to the left of the shaft, place a drift
or screwdriver in the hex, pointing down and tap smartly with a hammer, at
most 3 times, this is what Amtech workshop told me to do.

I get a constant 60 degrees from my CFR inbuilt heater.  It starts to drop only when you don't pull the trigger for a while.

Thanks for the advice... doesn't seem to want to budge though!!!
I'll keep trying, have sprayed WD40 on it so will see what it is like in the morning.

Cheers
