Soot
« on: November 25, 2009, 10:51:52 am »
Customer had joiner in to fit a new loft access door in a
terrace house 150 years old.
Takes out old one and surprise surprise big fall of soot
on a cream wool landing carpet. He'd sheeted using decorators
sheets so it went through to carpet.
That was 4 days ago.
She said the carpets was black and it literally was
I said I wouldn't clean it because I didn't think it would
clean up right.
Did I do right, she'd vacced it 6 times and it was still black.

Had a few soot jobs (Soot, not foot  ;D), bird flown down chimney, etc.
Ultrapac renovate and acidic rinse never failed me yet.

Worst thing they can do is get the hoover on to it - this just seems to drive the soot into the carpet pile.

Ultrapac renovate is the dugs for this type of job though, no question.

That's why I didn't do it.
She wasn't prepared to pay me unless it was
looking good again and I told her I couldn't
guarantee that.
The fact that I revised my price my price for the
extra work involved and she wouldn't pay it
also made me walk.

Good for you, John for walking away.
Clearly from what you describe the customer's expectations are unreasonable. Ultra pac would do a good job but would it be good enough for her ?

Ben.

I would have got a hand tool and done a square bit as a demo in the middle, allow her to make her mind up :)

I think it was Ken Wainwright that did a soot job with Dry Fusion, similar to the one shown. Looked a good job as well.

We did a lot of British Gas claims and never had a problem with soot. High alkaline cleaner usually Champion but Ultrapac will do the same, acid rinse and always came up pristine.
