Customer expectations
« on: November 24, 2009, 05:49:36 pm »
I'm still only doing jobs for family and friends and have had some good results and some cleans when there isn't a great deal of difference at the end from how the carpet was at the begining,I presume this is due to the levels of soiling and the colours of the carpets being cleaned.I sometimes feel a little disapointed that the results haven't looked instantanously better,am I right about this being due to carpets not being too soiled and their colour or do you think I'm doing something wrong?

Also what do you say to a customer who expresses disapointment when you know you have got their carpets as clean as possible?

Wayne as you know ive only been working 2 months myself.Im sure some of the more experienced guys will tell you that we aren't miracle workers, and it takes years of practice to get the best results.I sometimes look at carpets ive cleaned and think,Could i have done a better job?I always give it 100%,as all decent CC's should, because if you go in with a slap dash attitude, you've no chance in making a living from this trade.

Im still learning everyday, and always try to ask the Experienced guys if im stuck.

In answer to your last question - find out at the beginning what the customer expects.
I had one who moved a settee and asked "will it come up like that"? It was like new under the settee.
Obviously NO - but I had to explain why, and what she could expect.
She accepted this and was happy when I finished.

What should you get with carpets you clean that are already pretty clean?
I would expect the carpet to be softer (assuming it has a pile) cause you have removed the sticky dirt and any loose bits of pile that are clogging the carpet, and also a good chance it should smell fresher.
I have had clients say "oh it smells nice". Now I dont add anything to my clean to make a smell, so I ask "what does it smell of"?  Nose goes again....... "its smells clean". Bang on - bad and stale odours have been washed away.

Give them their money back ;)  as if,

Well thats what most seem to adveritise, " Money back if not completly happy "
" Cleanest you will ever see, or money back "
" We will make your carpets like new " yeh course you will :)

Explain to them the possible reasons for the custys dissapointments , ie traffic lane grey, light reflection, condition of carpet etc etc, but of course you should really be making all of these problems clear to your custy on surveying, explain the expected results , the chance of complete removal of stains and you wont get to many dissapointed custys.
i always try to give them an honest evaluation, then when it turns out better than their expectatons its a bonus.

Don`t make silly statements, or build up their hopes. ie all the stains will come out, it will look like new. Tell them there's no guarantee they will come out, but you will try your best. If they do come out, your the hero !!!!

What Gary said plus, if they ask about a stain or anything else, dont answer with "No Problem", or you may well up with one!

Wayne,
Be careful with wool  and wool berbers, you wont get the full result until dry.
In every situation bring the customers expections down below what you expect to achieve, as you get more experienced it will become naturally, i have got 2 suites on next wednesday if you fancy a drive over again, you are more than welcome.

Show them a bucket of the dirty water?

Ask them to come and have a look when you are halfway through-often they can see much more of a difference if you show them a before and after state of their carpet.

I always show them the half cleaned carpet or suite specially when just pre sprayed (naughty boy) you need to show them you're value and why they wanted it cleaning and the best ..... how much money you have saved them if they would have bought new.

Don't forget the benefits of health.

you'll like this - not a lot! but you'll like it  ::)

there's NO such thing as magic - we cant clean out damage or make old carpets new again - but what we can do is make em as clean as a professional posssibly can - if a custy in doubt - offer em a free test only if you are really sure that your clean is up to spec:

clean white towel - dampen it with water or MS MP blah and gently "agitiate" the area in question - if towel becomes soiled then it is obviously still dirty -  if it stays white then you are visually vindicated and your results speak for themselves - needs confidence in your own abilities but works a treat on the doubtin thomas'!!!

Best wishes

I was asked if I ever put oxo cubes in the waste tank, to make the water dirty :o
The woman had heard of this before. Only if I add mince, carrots and onions to make a stew, I replied. Ended up doing nearly the full house.

if anything you should add some clear water to dilute it a bit, so you don't embarass the dirty bar stewards ;D
