Smoke deodoriser
« on: November 24, 2009, 04:47:10 pm »
Hi All.

Got a nice little job in new year deodorising 10 rooms in a big hotel. Used to be smoking rooms, going non-smoking.

Got several products in mind like KillOdor Plus, Alltec odour neutraliser, prochem odour neutraliser. Anyone tried them and which is best?

Cheers

I assume you are talking about carpet/curtains/upholstery  in the rooms , any of the products you mentioned would work.

I recommend investing in one of these

Very effective.

Jason, will that remove"curry" smells from homes?

For example, i do some work for letting agents. And alot of times there's flats where the previous tenants where Asian. More times than not there's always a very stong curry/asian cooking smell in the house that never goes. My contacts at the letting firms ask me if there is anything i can do and i always have to say no :(

I should make it clear, its not always a carpet issue as sometimes these smells are in flats without carpeting! i.e. woodfloors etc

thanks
tony

Yes you will remove curry smells , I have used these many times on smoke damage jobs .

The odour source needs removing, I prefer to use cleaning materials with no odour to them , because then I can smell more clearly that things have been properly cleaned.

We have a smaller machine than this which we regularly use in caravans to remove odours.  Normally needs to be left in there for at least 24 hours to work properly.

John Kelly sells them for £75

looks and sounds good. But 24hours! bit of a pain if you need to do the full house.

If its left in the hall way and all teh doors left open? will this do the trick? depends on the size of home i guess.

We have got one of the big ozone machines (like the one at Hydramaster) and it is excellent.  It goes into a destruct mode at the end of the cycle to make the area safe as ozone is potentially hazardous.

I would be very cautious about using ozone in an area that I could not control - eg hotels.

Also think about The Vaportek Restorator - much cheaper (but the cartridges must be replaced), safe and effective.

Siloch, how long does it take to do an average room with the Vaportek? roughly

Is it effective on most smells? anyting it cant get rid off? i'm very tempted with this one.

Tony,
With most of these things you are looking at overnight.  I know it is a pain but build it into the pricing.  I do a lot of work for letting agents and they usually just want the problem fixed.

Have a word with Stuart or Dave at Restoration Express.  They may also recommend Bad Odour Blocks.  They are so cheap you can leave them on site.  They may apeear to be just masking the smell but they contain pairing agents which pair with the odour at a molecular level.

I may be wrong but I think I have read somewhere that you should not use an ozone machine if the carpets are still wet.
If my memory is correct the reason given was that you will add oxygen to the water in the carpet and turn it into bleach.
H2O into H202. ( hydrogen peroxide )
Some of you chemists out there might know if this is the case.

You are right fen man, also remove fish tanks , rubber ,, tape up upvc window seals , ventilate rooms thoroughly before using them.

This can be made like you are actually adding value and doing something rather than just dropping a machine off and plugging it in. I always post danger signs on the doors.

Thanks for all the info guys, but this job needs to be done in 2 days tops - 10 rooms, carpets, curtains, upholstery, beds, mattresses, even the lamp shades! oh, and a huge corridor - no time for 24 hrs / room with an ozone generator.

So I guess it is down to HWE with deodorisers in the tank! I have pre-warned them that some heavily padded items like mattresses and bed bases may not be completely odour free, and they are happy with that.

Think I might try Kill Odour Plus from Chemspec, as it is Woolsafe and I can use it in woolsafe jobs in future. If anything else is better, let me know!!!

Cheers
