Anyone got a gearbox for a caddy van ?
« on: November 20, 2009, 04:47:46 pm »
Can you bloody beleive it eh ! Van has started popping out of 5th,having to hold it in,typically it`s a common fault on thease vans,so spare ones are hard to come by !
Had to book it into the garage in the morning.
When will things stop going wrong,i must have really ped someone off in my last life !  >:(
Think i might be taking it back to where i bought it from !

Mark

I think it all started going down hill when that lucky rabbits foot of yours got myxomatosis.

It's not bad luck Mark, it's the decisions you are making, which is good news as you can take responsibility and change the way you think.

Thats a bugger ah :( your not having much luck mate :( how many miles has the van done? its strange that its jumping out of 5th, usualy when a clutch starts going, its jumps out of the lower gears i.e. 1st.

Have you tried Kwik-Fit? Some of the bigger ones do gear boxes too i am sure. They are pretty cheap compared to garages and you wont get ripped off. I have been going there for years for things like MOT, servicing and tyres.

You could also try a local scrappy?? just watch you dont get a crap one! if your handy with that type of thing you could install it yourself. But gear boxes are quite fiddley

I paid £240 all in i think last time i needed a new clutch. Brand new.

Not a clutch problem, had the plug out the gearbox earlier,no oil in it,5th is highest up,so gets starved of oil first, should all be ok ! would not trust any of those places, took my old van to ats and they said servo and master cylinder gone ! turned out to be water in my brake fluid !

This one has done 175 thou,so just run in really  ;D

I am spanner handy, have called loads of scrappers all rec to me from a vw nut i know, london etc etc, nothing !
Member of lot`s of Vw forums,as i am into my dubs (why i bought a vw caddy) just was not expecting it to go within weeks of buying it.
Don`t really want to be getting my fingers dirty with this one,can claim it back on tax after all.Did the clutch in my rocco ,and that was a pig,no half as much of a pig as changing the gearbox in my ford zephyer though ,big v6 box, little me = pain, and vowed never to strip a gearbox down ever again, had to swap input shafts on the boxes,as they were different, too many needle bearings in there !

At least you are good with spanners Mark, I would have to shell out and trust a garage.  :(

All self taught, well that and doing my chef training apprenticeship, with a bloke who was one of the first people to put a rover v8 into a ford anglia, and started up a drag racing club in the 60`s big v8 american blocks etc,he was a chef/ storeman and retired in my 2 yr there, but stayed friends,20 yrs later he is still going, used to drink a bottle of teachers every night, till he had a stroke and fell backwards into the pit,had to learn everything again!!!

Quite funny, but i cleaned some carpets for a young lad in an ex rental (also a dub fan and mechanic, converts and restores etc) he happened to work at a vw specialist, who i was told to call by members on a vw forum, which was just down the rd from the house i cleaned, well the house belonged to the bloke who owns the garage, and he was really impressed with the work i did,so in his words "he will look after me" what goes around ,comes around !
Going to batter my overdraft with this one ! But getting a box from a bloke on the forum, who is meeting me at the garage, and also having a look around the van

As you only had the van a few weeks, and you bought it from a garage/dealer - have you no comeback on them?

That's good Mark, networking with Custies and if they appreciate what you do and have a common interest you can't go wrong.

Joe the bloke was a nightmare,he promised to send us a set of hubcaps for the golf we bought off him ,as they were supposed to be getting sprayed, still waiting a month later ! Also said he would send a head unit for the golf, still waiting.I have a load of his stuff that he left in my van though,he won`t be getting it back.Long story but we bought the golf off him without tax or v5 and had to wait 3 weeks before it turned up,he let her use a fecked old astra as a stop gap,we arranged to take back the astra on a sun morn at 11am,he eventually turned up at 12.15 after we had been calling him since 11.15,my wife got out the car when he turned up ,and gave him a look,so he swore at her,so i made her go sit in the car while i had a word with him,he was a big bloke, but i am not having some idiot swear at her ,when he was in the wrong,he then tried tio get £140 out of me for taxing it,i promptly told him where he could go !
When i bought the van it was having it`s mot, they looked really through, but in hindsight they might have been doing him a favour !
