What would you choose and why?

HF5 4040 !
I've used both.
The merlin is a tidy and space saving unit which is why I bought it as I was running it from my flat.
However I did use it without a pump, tap tds about 300 product was 35 , waste ratio pretty bad but did make water quickly.
Now I have the HF5 from gaps water, waste ratio of about 50/50, product tds about 8 and can fill 650 ltrs in 3 hours.
In my situation this has benefited my work and in my opinion a 4040 is far superior

I have just bought a HF5, thought the ratio was 70/30, as thats what i have been running it at?

I have a tap on the waste so as I can tweak it, I have to fill up at night from my flat to the van (ro indoors with no static tank, only pure fed out to van) 50/50 sacrifices a little in tds purity but the fill time is quicker .

I've used both as well.
Both produce pretty well though the 4040 had the edge.
As already stated, Merlin takes up a bit less room.
TDS from merlin is generally higher as they're not the cleanest of ROs - especially as the membranes start to age.
Another issue is whether water is metered or not.  Merlin produces a lot more waste than a 4040 - though this can vary depending on the setup.

So I suppose it depends what you want really.
I currently run a merlin.
I only released the 4040 as it went with other stuff I was selling at the time.
In my current setup I'm tight for room, need to keep the waste down as it runs into a ditch, but high production and low TDS are not the main issues - so a tough call really.  As with most questions like this, there is no definitive answer as it depends on the individual circumstances.

dont know of any other suppliers that do them,
merlins were designed for use in the domestic environment, under sinks for point of use water on demand, 4040's do cost more but are far more capable units and intended for commercial applications.
I'd say that the moneys well spent on a 4040 and is more servicable than a merlin (with regards to flushing) and in the long run the membrane will last far longer than the merlins.
 Also worth remembering is that to get the optimum quoted results for the merlin you would probably need to add a decent pump to increase the supplies pressure, this could add another £150 or so to your setup anyhow.
