I think for domestic custs setting up a S/O for the window cleaner would be overkill.
what about paypal or online banking ;)

i would love to use S O but i have trouble keeping track of the odd few people i work for who pay by online banking...how do you know who has paid and who has told their bank to hold payment? Is there a quick & easy way of knowing?

Easy way to see is look on your online banking.

Answer to Bob, they set it up themself or just can make up a form they sigh and send to the bank or you can, which gets the bank to set it up.

it really is simple.

Downside they have full control if they owe more you cannot up the standing order. (this is where direct debit comes into its own but from what I here is quite hard to get set up for smaller comapanies (this could be wrong) I just did not ever look into that, just something I heard of a window cleaner

Yeah, but if you have loads of people paying you week in week out, is it not time consuming to check each one has paid? And what happens when they pay but you can't carry out the work for whatever reason?

there bill would be in credit, it does not take long at all, trust me cheques take long I hate them. but it is eithwer them or SO, I will get round to adding paypal but need to get pqd machine sorted first to take money there and then chip and pin and over the phone  ;D
Online banking is the way forward, postal strike who cares already paid ;)

And the way the post men keep walking out thinking it is clever to drink beer when they are working, there will be no post office soon, only then will people that say online banking dont work will start to listen :-X

I will retire now......
