pump strainer leaking heavily

spotted a bit muck in the strainer, unscrewed it, washed the mesh under the tap. thats better.
put it back on, turned tap on tank to prime the system. starts dripping. turned pump on drips even more. when pressure switch kicks in it's gushing out.
i've taken it off and on again 4-5 times and no different,
the rubber washer/ring is still in place.
whats going on?
