The van is starting to smell like a pond...
« on: October 28, 2009, 07:03:32 pm »
As title... My van stinks like a pond !

Having rushed my system together and into the van I never thought about floor protection :(

Its ply lined including the floor. What options are there to cover the floor ?

Need something cheap and cheerfull as I'm pretty much skint.

Go to the subject: Good rubber matting for van!

Its cheap and cheerful from B&Q about 10mmm thick, black, 3-3.5ft wide and about 6ft length, youll need 2 rolls for a combovan size.

Spot on.  :D

I done my van floor with protecta-kote at weekend very easy to use, done first  coat Saturday, next coat sunday morning, very easy to use and bloody good finish ( even if i say so myself ), only problem the van still smells of the stuff even though i am leaving the doors open for long periods.
Definately worth the £80

would not like to see the damage under that after a year or 2 m8.

take out system, 1 or 2 hours work on a saturday morning

rip up plywood ( 1 hours work )

pop to wickes and get some garage floor paint ( under 15 quid if i remember correctly )

paint floor of van, get 1 coat on before lunch ( less than 1 hour ), it will be dry after tea time, get another coat done then ( another hour )

go to bed

wake up sunday

do what you normally do on sunday

sunday late afternoon, fit system back in ( 1 or 2 hours )

all done

5 - 7 hours work, 1 weekend, less than 20 quid

pay special attention ( slap on thick ) on the joints between floor and walls of van

if your van doesnt have any drainage holes, drill a few and give a good coat of paint to before the first coat

Thanks guys, havent got the option of taking out the tank as that is gonna take so long (the fuel tank needs removing if i do)

Longest i can go without using the back of the van is overnight.

See its a 4 seater - 2 in the front and two in the back - tank in the middle

Van doubles up as the family car and the family aint happy with the smell. I cant smell anything wrong with it, but i need to sort something out cos of all the earache im getting (from the kids)

Did mine about a month ago.... my ply was stinking.

so i took the ply from the floor, bought a tin of wickes anti-slip waterproof floor paint for around a tenner,

gave it 3 coats (white)

pulled arubber bung out of the corner of the van, in case of leeks,

now its perfect...

earier tonight my ro-man in the van blew a pipe, and was pumping water all over my van for probably an hour until i noticed it gushing out of the back door,

boy am i glad i painted it.... the water has now run out completely, and its as tho it had never happened at all..

Gary.

If you use protectakote, there's no need to take the ply-lining out. Just paint over it making sure you seal the joins.
The pen is mightier than the sword (and a lot easier to write with!)
