Queen Mary 2 in Liverpool
« on: October 20, 2009, 09:30:41 am »
Queen Mary 2 is visiting Liverpool today as part of a round Britain cruise to celebrate her 5th birthday. She docks at 11.30 if any of you northerns fancy going to see her, she's breathtaking.
Obviously what helps make her not only the world's longest, widest, tallest, fastest, most luxurious transatlantic ocean liner is the standard of carpet cleaning that adorn her public rooms. ;D ;D

Haha, nice one Simon.  It's certainly a feather in your cap to be able to say you clean the carpets.

she was off Scarborough last Friday a sight indeed but did you know that the cunard and P&o brand names are not the same companies off old  both are now owned by carnivall cruise line of miami U.S.A the QM2 was built in France and a number of people died when her dry dock gang way collapsed .
As very proud ex Merchant seaman ,It is shamefull that a british flagged merchant ship has no British ratings onboard with only the Officers British. I sailed with the captain of the QM2 about 15 years ago on the P&O container ship Jervis Bay ,he spent a week on board learning about our new radar system ,capt Warner was a very nice man  and a pleasure to have on our ship.wish I was his carpet cleaner on the QM2

QM2 is owned by Carnival UK, which in turn is owned by the Carnival Corporation of the USA, as is P&O Cruises. The vast majority of cruise lines use foreign nationals in the lower ranks. Some of the P&O indian, Philippino and Pakistani crew members have generational links stretching back to when the company was first founded. It is not true to say that QM2 have no British ratings, there are many in the bars, entertainment and catering areas that are British. Captain Warner is now Commodore Warner and he is in command of QM2 on this cruise.
I think the most important thing is that RMS Queen Mary 2 is the flagship, not just of the Cunard fleet, but of the entire British merchant navy and proudly flies the Union Jack on her stern wherever she goes and is regarded as a true icon of Britain, succeeding the magnificent Queen Elizabeth II as the most famous ocean liner in the world. Plus, she's drop dead gorgeous inside and out. ;D

Simon we dont fly the union jack from the sterns of ships it is called a red ensign or as we call it the red duster.
years ago when the british crew were kicked off he QE2 the union wrote a letter to her majesty asking her to distance herslf from Qe2.There was outrage  amongst the merchant navy with no seamen /motormen or stewards on the merchant navy flag ship .and few would regard the Qm2 as there flag ship who are still in or left from the merchant navy.a good looking ship yes ,by the way you say flag ship of the merchant navy ,theres nothing left of the merchant navy. if there was I wouldnt be cleaning chuffing carpets right now, I would be down a chuffing engine room covered in oil and sweat ,saying that I was the other day when my t/m broke down :) :P

Gone are the days of the mid 1900s', where cruising was the domain of of the more affluent minority.  That has changed to catering for the mass proleteriat and become far more cut throat. Hence profit margins are far slimmer. There is no doubt that foreign crews will be more economic for Carnval/Cunard. Financial expectation & union interference of home based crews would surely drive any operation, which wanted to stay in business, elsewhere.  Worth reminding ourselves that many in this country feel that there financial rewards should be such, without appreciating what wealth they are actually creating

had Been watching a documentary on the qm2 on utube when my 18month daughter pulled telephone line out  :-\

Can't seem to find the docu now no matter what I type. Has anyone seen it.....It was basically about life onboard, the passengers, the crew, the ship itself etc....

Is the qm2 still the largest ship in the world?    I thought it was the Oasis of the seas.

Ady,
Your quite right, it is the Red Ensign. Here's a picture of it flying on the stern of QE2. P&O's Oceana is in the background.

Matt,
A satellite dish that looks like a giant golf ball got blown off one of our ships a few weeks ago, if I'd have known, i'd have put a word in for you. ;D
