All very familier on here :(

I too worked in the print industry for nearly 20 years with one of the best known family companies in the south easy known as Jarrolds Printing.

Use to be a great place to work but all went downhill around 2004 :-[

Never would I go back to working in a factory :-\

Bob

I worked in print too from 1975 - 1988.  Great money when there was overtime but not so great when there wasn't.  All those damned rules too - not just from the management either.  I would hate to do those sort of hours these days.  If some people think dirty hands from carbon is bad, they should try doing a washup after a long mucky run.  I used to look like Joseph's multi coloured dreamcoat.  There were a lot of laughs there but there was a horrible side to it as well.  I worked at some place called Garrod and Lofthouse.  After years of cutting back, it finally folded in '88.  I grew to totally hate shiftwork so moving on was fine by me.

The email I have is regarding the sale of their machinery - i'll try and dig it out - it's the result of site closure.

Yep, they have two Heidelberg Harris M600 32 page web presses for sale due to site closure.

Nope I got out a couple of years ago - do you know Graham Andrews or Roy Burridge?

I worked for Redwood Press years ago untill they went under then went on to Butler & Tanners for fifteen years and got out just before they self destructed. In it's day Printing was brilliant for the pay. In later years pay and conditions just spiralled downwards. I started w.cleaning as an escape route, got too busy and had to jump ship. I was cleaning all morning then printing from two till ten and vice versa. Wish I could have done it years ago.  :)

p.s. Haynes are in trouble in Sparkford too.

I'm hoping to jack it all in.
I accept it's easy money for outlay and lack of qualifications to do it, but even though we are wfp I ache more and more as each day goes on. I'm also bored of doing the same thing over and over again, there's only so many variations on the theme of glass ;D
I would probably continue with it but with holiday caravans to run I need to move 80 miles closer to them and it'll give me a chance to have zero mortgage burdening us, and a chance to focus on the carpet cleaning side more, without the need to work for the sake of having to work.
I'll still be keeping a few of our larger window cleaning commercials as they only need doing every few months so I'll keep my words of wisdom going on here and other forums.

Worst bit is when you jump into full time 'cos you won't have enough work. I got quite friendly with some local cleaners who gave me bits of work and some subbying. Had a quiet year then suddenly it all took off this year. Now I have too much to cope with. My advice would be to forget about the speed and the big bucks and try to offer the best service you can. Word soon spreads and then it snowballs.

Thanks for your words of advice.  I have been full time now for about 3 months and I am picking up work but still need a lot more.  I am trying to buy some work reasonably local to me off Mr Williams who posted on this thread.  If you are reasonably local to me I would like to meet up for a beer.

Not being funny Neil but I'm sure 99.99% of people would say the same about their jobs too!

If I had my time again I'd be a surgeon. What a feeling of job satisfaction they must get from actually saving or improving peoples lives. ;)

So, we can gather from this then, that the industry is not full of muppets, just full of ex-printers!! ;D

Just had a week and half off and tommorow I start my 8 weekly round all over again..been to the chiropractor, back feels good and the SL-X is all cleaned and silky smooth.

But with all well ...I still get bored doing the same houses every 8 weeks..and can pretty much predict where I will be to the hour for the next 6,5 weeks...groundhog day.

Sound ungrateful..yep I suppose it does...anyone else feel the same?

Cheers
Dave.
