Second hand kit?
« on: October 03, 2009, 12:50:40 pm »
As I posted yesterdayI'm a newbie on here just about to buy some kit.I have had various price quotes for new extractors but I'm wondering if its worth looking at second hand and if so are there any sites that specialise in this stuff?
I had a quick look at Ebay but didn't see much that looked decent.

Thanks in advance

Wayne,
To be honest dereks right about the truck mount on E-bay looks far more profesional and you cant even buy a decent new portable for that, pity the van yellow though

Why is it a pitty the van is yellow? With good graphics that van would stand out and get you noticed! If I had the money I'd bid for it without a shadow of a doubt!

I would keep things simple and cheap. Get a second hand Ninja or similar and focus on building your client base and 'survive' your first year. Spend some money on training and all the little bits of kit that don't cost much but save you time.

The last thing you need is to be a few grand down with a big pile of inanimate ironmongery sat on your drive.

Your right and am sure there was a used ninja on here last week for sale with all the kit and well looked after..

i'm the opposite to mike, for a few reasons

1) the better the equipment, the better and easier the job

2) the more money you spend, the more your inclined to make it work, if you buy  cheap then the motivation to get the money back isn't there, all though i will except that everybodies character is different.

3) the  better the equipment, the more you big yourself up to your customer. the more proud you are of your setup and the more eager you are to get out there and use it, i love getting up in the morning and cleaning carpets, only regret is not doing it 15 years ago.

i invested everything i had to start my business, if it doesn't work, i'm stacking shelves in tesco's for the rest of my life.
this gives me the motivation to push my business forward, always striving to make the next month better than the last.

to me, a half hearted set up to test the water so to speak is a failure waiting to happen.

but remember thats my own opinion based on my own character, and doesn't necessarily mean its the way for you to conduct your venture.

if i could start my business all over again knowing what i know now, i'd of gone for even better truckmount, and a bigger van, can't believe how much room equipment takes up.

anyway, there's 2 opposite views for you to consider, neither right or wrong before mike thinks i'm being arguementitive.

you'll probably get a few more differing opinions, mull them all over then make your own decision, its your business.

hope this helps

Derek

On this one I'm more concerned he would get a machine that ain't new and may cause problems. The Bid Steamways are very good but can be tempremental burner wise, which you don't need as a newbie.

In fact if he was to do the 'burn your bridges/poo or bust' approach he would be better getting a brand new like you did and get the backup and reliability of a new machine from a distributor.

Im with Derek on this one, i used a prochem portable for about 3 months but i soon realised that you cant make any real money with a portable so bought a brand new truck mount and still hardly had any customers, would i be in business if i hadnt upgraded probably not and i've been trading 3.5 years and dont regret investing in my business as Derek said it drives and motivates you.

I certainly couldn't go back to a portable now. The very thought of it  ;D

That's a SM van, the cheeky burgers have even kept the original "carpet & upholstery truck mounted cleaning" vinyl decals, just took off the SM logo and put a cheapy bit of vinyl signwriting there instead :D

A very good point of view from Derek, it really is the type of person you are that dictates the best approach for you.

I disagree that you can't make any money with portables, along with many others I am living proof that that isn't the case ;)

BUT, in my opinion a portable is for your early years and not forever - when you get busy it's horrifically tiring running round with a porty.  My van is arriving next week hopefully, shortly followed by a nice spangly Blueline.  Can't wait ;D ;D

Well done Jim - about time.

I'm getting my spitfire fitted on the 23rd, also can't wait  ;D

I've built up a nice business with my Ninja, but setting up and breaking down 3 times a day gets monotonous.

I think a TM is essential these days if you need to be back for 3 o'clock.

Have you seen that new bird on Countdown. :o

That was my mates TM, the TM had problems then last winter it was never protected from from frost and froze a few times and more things broke, the guy who now owns it does not even know how to operate it, I would leave well alone unless its had a serious overhaul and service.
