Depending on size these can be very, very expensive, so you have got to be very confident you can clean this.

Vacuum like mad, back and front, test colours for colour run, prespray, clean with a neutral/acidic cleaner, and dry with turbo as fast as you can.

This should stop any problems. Rug are easy to clean if you know what you are doing, but it when it starts to go wrong them you are in big trouble. As Barry has mentioned in other posts

Come on Sherlock 89.
live and lean, the worst that can happen is that feeling of your hairs on the back of your neck go stiff and cold, and you will never do that again but that is if, if you make a mistake, but do it slowly and methodicly as karl has said and learn.

If you going go for it, you may as well start with the big expensive ones.  :o :o :o
From now on, all other rugs will be easier, but you will always have to be careful, always.

If its colour fast then its easy.

Best to clean them in your workshop though ie. your garage, shed, front room.

If there not too dirty a really good vac and a wipe down with a microsplitter and terry towels can work wonders on the iffy rugs.

The V & A in London uses rain water and bare feet! Not joking.

Our workshop is an old school gym changing room. The showers at the back end are still in tact, an ideal room for cleaning rugs. In the past when I did quite a lot of rug cleaning I used to lie them face down and beat the back before vacuuming. This loosened all the dirt which was evident when you lifted the rug. They were then cleaned with Chemspec oriental rug shampoo and rinsed out using a hose pipe, honest, they were then squeegeed dry and finally extracted, this rinsing often took 3-4 goe's before the water ran clear. Finally they were hung up to dry. All rugs were tested for colour fastness, most were usually allright. Never had a problem with any of them and customers were delighted with the result. A lot of these rugs are actually washed in streams after manufacture.

Never had a problem with a rug, always cleaned as if it were upholstery first.
Heavy marks can stand a second go once dried.
The more you vacuum it, the less effort it will take on the rinse.

Sherlock

Mist lightly the MS onto the rug and then towel off in the direction of the pile.  Dampen the towel if required.  Turbo dry although it wont be wet anyway.

Pre-vac is a must.

John Kelly - what did you beat the rugs with.  Ive tried this in the past with a plank but not much success.

thanks
Mark

I used a thick bamboo cane like the ones inside rolls of carpet, cut down to about 1 metre. Also the vacuuming on the back with a beater bar dislodges a lot of dirt.

There used to be from a company called Holloways a Flailer, a sort of slow turning drum with leather straps, the carpet was laid face down over a mesh then beaten, I think Ann Summers have pinched the idea.

If you have still to clean the rugs Sherlock, you should speak to Franklins of Sheffield

They've been cleaning rugs for about 100 years and really know what they're talking about
