Unless it gets very very cold, you don't have to use anything really. Especially with houses, where the heating is on.

Isopropyl alcohol seems to help a little bit in frost protection. About 500ml per 500l tank.

Sorry 500ml will do absolutely nothing to prevent freezing in a 500 litre tank...and as soon as the water hits the air the alcohol will evaporate ....alcohol's like this are perfect in sealed systems but in much higher percentages that 500ml in 500litres.

If the water freezes by the time it gets to the brush, its time to go home, unless you've a hot water system ( I hav'nt )
fortunately its never been cold enough once the sun is up for this to be an issue for me.

However, I have a fixed reel in my van, am unable to put a heater in it overnight as street parked, sometimes in winter it will all get iced up and takes hours to thaw it all out.
What I now do when sub zeros are forcast is pump antifreeze through my entire system on the van from a 25 ltr barrel and in morning pump that back into the barrel ( recycle ) connect back up to tank and flush with pure for a couple of mins, and off to work.
( i have no ro or di onboard the van thats all indoors )

Alchohol does allow you to work a few degrees below, its colourless so doesnt affect the quality. If you use a bypass sytem to re-circulate it it doesnt uselessly float on top of the water. I prefer Absolute Vodka  :

..its doesnt matter for WFP. Such as isopropanol has monoatomic structure, it disappears very-very fast on open air. Therefore isopropanol doesnt influence negatively on pure water WC.

Our WFP van systems include Webasto water & air heaters and we use isopropanol with rates from 1:500 to 1:250 to water. All our vans stay in garage.

In fact, during the most last winters the average temperature was not below the -7°C.

Therefore, we could work almost every day in winter., exluded days with strong frost & wind, such as Saint-Petersburg is next to Baltic sea.

I thought you guys put coal-braziers underneath the tanks like the RKKA did during WW2!

It just goes to show that if you can work in winter then so can we!
