Thinking about setting up a website- have looked at diy microsoft office live. Has anyone set one up themselves or could they recommend any companies that will do one and what sort of costs would I be looking at?

Office live websites are IMO harder to build and harder to optimise than the real deal,.. I've yet to see one perform as well as a proper website.

I built a website for my dad 2 weeks ago and its already on the first page of Google for his preferred search terms.

I normally leave website building for the long evenings and quiet winter months,.. but I can point you in the right direction and help out if you want.

There are loads of free templates on the net, just google them. Then alter them to your liking. Most html websites can be edited with notepad/wordpad.

Domain names vary from $1 to about $10 per year, try godady

You can find some cheap hosting for about £20 - £30 per a year.

Then you need a free ftp program to upload your site, i use filezilla.

Websites arnt that hard to produce, do a little research first before you rush in and get an idea of what you would like.

Filezilla has a major security flaw that leaves it open to the gumblar trojan,.. I found out the hard way!

Cheap hosting isn't always good hosting,... I use www.letshost.ie because it covers every eventuality and I have yet to see anyone beat the tech support and personal service they offer.

Domain names should be registered for a minimum of 2 years as 1 year registrations don't rank as well in Google.

Does it bring in much work? Do you know a guy called Paul Summers who cleans a few windows round by you?

I use office live and it works for me, I'm waiting for a call from a large contract I have just quoted for and they found me through my website.

Dont know paul but it gets me work when i dont canvass or advertise in the local papers,  its advertising in the background while i work or laze about.  With office live i can watch my reports on a weekly basic of how many people have visited my site. When people phone i ask them where did you see my advert, they say "you webpage". So I know it works,  ho good it does not matter as long as it gets me work.  I would rather it get me a little rather than nothing at all.
