FOR STEVE-UK PLEASE
« on: September 05, 2009, 04:04:44 pm »
hi steve,

FIL has purchased the gutter vac and a generator, going through old posts you mentioned you use a 100m extension cable, dads worry is that the amperage is around 18 so what size cable are you using as ominpole are advising that you only need a 2.5mm cable where dad has worked out he thought it should be nearer 6mm - (he has brought the 240 gutter vac)

Hope you don't mind me asking here is the post where you menitoned it

i had a trailer for my generator which had its perks- detachable, downfalls - storage, speed limit on motor way, theft, maintenance of trailer, parking,

I have since got a new van and leave the generator in the van, the way the loncin is designed when placed on the right hand side of the van, the key start and sockets face the middle of the van and the exhaust faces straight out the back doors, i have run it off 100m extension cable with no problems which should do most jobs

sorry to butt in on this but if it's any help i also use the loncin genie to power my omnivac...   being a ex sparky you are right in the need for a 6mm extension cable! however there are loads of variable & outside influences to consider aswell?

the safer size cable would be 4mm as although  omnipole have said 2.5mm should be fine (you can run 100m of it around the average house without any abnormal probs & it's rated at 32a) this does however assume that there will never be a large demand at many points at the same time.

i currently run 50m of 4mm artic and never encounter over heating power loss or surges,  i would not like to run a cable any less than this for the vac as at time when all 3 motors are on it will draw 4800w  which could potentialy melt a 2.5mm

dont know if this is any help? ???

Having read the posts, can I ask why you chose 240v as opposed to 110v?

I'm no electrician but is it not safer to use 110v outside?

i use a 40 metre power lead and have another 40 metre as backup where there is no other option, its the standard 2.5mm, I normally run just 2 motors when using the extra lead and keep an eye on it and have had no problems yet although it does get quite warm but not to hot to worry about
