I have not used any of the delivery companys but Royal Mail had a offer . You picked the area you wanted and they delivered them to all that area , but you had to spend a minimum of £500 .
With Royal Mail you know that the postman will deliver to all houses even if they have a long walk from the gates to the post box. With delivery companys I would wonder if all the leaflets were delivered

I'd say that you door knock when you have the time, and spend the money on more effective marketing methods, like some SEO work on you website or similar.
As you say, leafleting is no where near as effective, and very costly for the amount of customers you gain from it.

The standard claimed conversion rate for leaflets is 1% average, something that's put me off after trying and getting this response in the past.

I spent £250 on Black and White A6 double sided flyers on a good stock paper (more of a light card actually). Since Jan of this year we have delivered 25,000 of them and got  about £1900 of extra regular month work from it. :P

I will say though that we were delivering about 600 a day for a solid 2 week period to start with every month, but with the new work coming in over the last 8 months it's down to about 1 week now every month, this was cos I gambled and took my brother on so we could cracked through the work in about 2 weeks to start with (i was at full tilt working by myself at the time)

Best advice is to think about what you want to say about your business and what potential customers will want to hear. Plus always drop in the areas you already have existing business in first this was easily were i've picked up most of my work, one village i have even dropped 4 times and still pick up 5or 6 even now. I think this is because they see my van about all the time and feel that with so much work in a paticular area that i must be doing something right!!

Response rate is pretty poor but unfortunatley in Bedford there is a NO Cold Calling policy so i'm restricted in my marketing and this is easily the cheapest way to do it if your marketing budget is restricted.....if it is with the right flyer AND you can dedicate a bit of time..... go for it

In my area, to print a B/W leaflet, and deliver to 5000 houses costs £99.

A 1% conversion rate would yield 50 customers, @ around £12 per house, the maths look pretty good to me!

So that's £600 return for a £99 outlay, and that's only in month one!

From month two onwards thats a £600 profit each and every month!

I would suggest that is a pretty good investment, and far more likely to yield a good profit than SEO.

Good SEO will put you pretty near the top of google for a LOCAL search, say   ..............town window cleaner.
That response rate is quoted for a good quality professional colour leaflet, not black and white.  But if you normally get that response from black and white then that's very good.  And to get them printed AND delivered for that too, that's a great price.

Why do you you say that 50 customers for £99 is better than good SEO or google add words ?   For every £99 spent on a Website/SEO/Add words I'd expect far more than 50 customers from it in the long term.  I've spent £0 on SEO or any other promotion of my simple website, it's just listed in free directories and google maps etc, and I get around 3 enquiries a week from it, that's without anything spent on SEO, spend some money and that goes up considerably.

Why does £1.98 per house ( 50 customers for £99) seem a pretty good investment ?  For example I went door knocking night before last and got 7 customers in 2 hours.  That cost me nothing except 2 hours that I had spare.  That's better than costing £13.86 wouldn't you say ?
I've spent close to 15 hours canvassing so far in the last week and a half, and gained 40 customers, that's cost me nothing but my spare time, when I had it.  At £1.98 per customer that would have cost £29.70.

So it would cost £198 for a 100 customer round via the cheap leaflet route, and via door knocking it would cost around 28 to 38 hours of my free time, and £0 actual money. (except for a bit of fuel maybe).
