I didn't know about owned, or its slang use being utter defeat in an amusing and humiliating way, but very good use of a word Matt that probably doesn't get out much. For a bit of a wider acceptance, if you really want to champion this word can i suggest shouting it from the football terrace to humilate an apposing player. However there is always the chance that the rest of the terrace will turn and 'own' you because they don't know what it means.
