Stupid low prices
« on: August 21, 2009, 06:03:10 pm »
Hi guys, I'm looking into starting out(got my basic trad set today) but while doing a bit Market research into pricing ect.
I have two family members who live next door to each other. One is a 3 bed end terrace the other a 2 bed terrace. £3.50 each house  ??? I would have honestly gone double that and thought that was being fare.

I live in the Scottish Borders, but even that seems stupidly low

Scottish Borders council don't do a license, I couldn't find any thing on there web site so I phoned them up to find out that it's a discretionary requirement for some councils.

I would be up for it, so those that were doing it a job on the side would be weeded out.

£3.50 for a 3 bed house in the borders is very cheap £6 at least.

sfwc I take it your also in the Borders, I've had a little look back at your posts and I think I know who you are ! I saw your posts regarding wetherspoons I used to work for them and also poundstretchers(which I believe you also do).

If I see you about I'll say hi, as I still work in town just now but I don't live there and won't be looking for any customers there either( unless there is a demand for w/c in your town)

Most cleaners in my surrounding area charge £3 to £4 for a 3 bed semi (Merseyside area), I also did the same as the tip above when out canvassing (just started 1 week ago) and made sure I mentioned, when I got that great moment they say "actually no, I don't have a window cleaner" before getting to the price I mention frames and sills wiped over, door glass etc all cleaned professionally every time blah blah before getting to the price and I'll price what I'm willing to work for, not what I think is the lowest price.  (above the £4 mentioned obviously) and never been turned down on price yet....although it has only been a week or so, but I've gained around 20 customers and 4 or 5 small shop fronts.

My mum has had the same cleaner for years, he looks like a right dosser, (although I don't know that for a fact) I asked her how much he charges her................wait for it ................£1  YES £1   but she gives him £1.50 even though he's "rubbish and always misses loads"  :-\ ::)   It's a 3 bed semi on a small council estate.  Now that's a stupid low price !! :o

Teri Clean, you will always get people who have undercut others and have been left with under priced work. Allot of window cleaners in this area who like to do a whole street at once regardless of who is in and who is not, will go lower because they need to get allot for it to be worth while.

Then obviously you get the ones that are not quite legitimate, and even if they are they may take on some work and not put it through the books to allow them to go lower with the price. Or they just just have bought the badly priced work from someone else.

I once had someone who I went out to give a quote, it was about 6 windows and I charged £6.50. She said you are a little expensive arent you. I said, compared to who. Well my last house had 15 windows, guess much he charged? I said anything under £15 is cheap. She said £2.

I then proceeded to tell her that she didn't have a window cleaner, she had some crook not paying tax etc and probably claiming the dole, pretending to be a window cleaner.

You called me because someone referred me to you, and they gave you my number, you will also find us in the yellow pages e.t.c we are licence and insured e.t.c. which comes into it, and by law I am not allowed to pay employees less than minimum wage, and wouldn't want someone to work for less than minimum wage either.

Any I got the job, but how thick are people at times. If she seen a news report about children in foreign countries being put to work for £2 an hour, she would be sitting there shocked while she has a dole boy at her windows doing a job that would probably take her a couple of hours at 15 windows, and she would pay a window cleaner £2 for doing them. Even worse to think anything more than that is expensive.

She became a problem custi and was dropped latter on.

thats rubbish if you take you business seriously.

For any proper business you need to take into account your tax bill (that is if your not claiming benefits and back handing all payments?), your equipment purchases and up keep, fuel, vehicle maintenance, washing for clothing, scrims etc if your trad

AND then, take into account pension, holiday, sick pay.. which you dont get if your not PAYE.

PAYE is great if all you do is work 7-12 hrs a day and go home... with any self employed business you have much more overheads and time dedicated to your business. Such as working the evenings doing paper work, quotations etc.

1.5 times minimum wage being self employed is actually rubbish money.

Well in excess of 50% of everything I earn goes between tax, vat, vehicle costs, fuel, insurance, accountants etc,..
Then take into account wet days, days off sick, holidays, bank holidays, days you're let down by custies,..

If you're running a legit business and paying your taxes, I reckon 3 to 4 times the minimum wage is the least you need to aim for just to make ends meet!

Just a observation it seems that pricees sometimes are low in the north, yet rounds when sold are far better multiples than in south
