Domestic cleaning rates!
« on: August 13, 2009, 01:16:46 pm »
Hi everyone,

I am thinking about starting my own cleaning business/self employed! I am thinking about domestic cleaning just me to start with and if it picks up then maybe take someone on. What is the going rate for a domestic cleaner? I have to take in account insurance, tax and ni. Just would like to see if it would be worth doing?

Kind Regards
Emma

If its just you and you are taking all your materials, then aim for around £10-12 per hour mark. £8 per hour or thereabouts if you are labour only - check out what the agencies charge.

Then decide if you will be working for an hourly rate or an agreed price-per-job. The latter could work out to your advantage.

My own experience is that people will pay good rates for a good service, but will always expect a cleaner who works alone to be that little bit cheaper than a larger company offering the same (though not as personal) service.

i think it helps as well to be insured i have got alot more cutomers thru having it , i am doing well at the mo and have had 3 clients from an agency who were fed up of not having the same person go so stndards differed .

Im only starting off as 2 days a week so need to charge around £10-12 p/h for me to gain much profit. I have many years in the cleaning industry such as housekeeping and general domestic cleaning for friends, So they would get a high standard service and not just a rushed job.

Thanks for your help.

If you are working on your own, you shouldnt need to think in terms of profit as you are merely singing for your supper, so to speak. After paying your costs (which should be very low) and tax, NI etc (a good accountant will keep this right down low), the rest is yours. From £12 an hour you should be walking away with no less than £9-ish.

But as you've already decided what you need to charge, i'm really confused why you asked the question to start with? I'm not being rude, i'm saying you've already made your mind up from the sound of it.

Vacman - If I understand it correctly you charge per visit not as an hourly rate this is the way I want to go. Do you usually go & visit the house & work out how long it will take x your hourly rate. If so how does that go down with your customers. What is they finish things earlier one week to the next?
Do you supply customer with a list of what will be done - do they have a contract?
I'd be really interested to hear from you - info@kc-services.com

Barbara, i am now working only with my sister (it is our joint business) but we have employed people in the past. One of us will visit any potential new customer to see them, to see their home, to find out what they want, and decide if we can do / want the job.

There is no list of jobs and no contract. The client tells us what jobs they want doing and we price accordingly. I will admit that we are currently at our most flexible in terms of doing what people want because there is only me and sis involved, but when we've had staff we have had to be more streamlined and less task-specific, if that makes sense. Don't get me wrong, we don't analyse every last ornament on the matlepeice when we quote, we simply decide how long (based on experience) we are likely to have to spend in a house, based on its current standards and, if in the absence of regular cleaning so far, what it will probably be like after we've been going for a while.

We have never charged by the hour, when we took the business on they were already pricing by the work and we continued to do so. We have never once told a client we will spend an amount of time with them, yes, we may say 'around' this amount of time if they want to know how long the cleaning will take for the purpose of being away for the duration, but we make a very clear point of telling them they are paying for the work. On the few occasions where this has caught people off-guard, we make the point that your hairdresser as one example is unlikley to charge for his/her time, they charge for what you have done.

It is a long story and one which i dont say much about, but my sister and I never wanted to run a cleaning business, we kind-of took over the reigns from someone else in the family. Every time we had staff it caused us a headache in one way or another, to the point that we now currently do the work ourselves, although we are not ruling out expansion at some point. We don't make a massive amount from the cleaning but we like being able to please ourselves amongst other things.

I would be doing it with another cleaner to start off with until we have enough hours to employ as I don't want to do it on a regular basis.
Thanks for your advice - lets see how it goes  ;)
