000 TDS Problem
« on: August 08, 2009, 11:35:42 am »
Hi,

I purchased a pure freedom trolley system a week or so ago complete with a 300GPD RO.

Followed the instructions on setting up the RO and all worked well, tap water reading was around 320 and after the RO and DI did it's stuff came out pure at 000 and produces around 50 litres per hour.

After approx 24 hours I had to top up the storage tanks and make some more pure water but upon measuring at intervals the TDS of the pure water produced it was all over the place 6ppm then 3ppm then 12ppm. (I did flush the system through for 20 mins before)

The next day I phoned Pure freedom for help they said because it had been sat idle for 24 hours or more disconnect the blue pipe from the DI unit and flush for 10 mins or so then reconnect.

I did this yesterday checked the TDS at various times but again the TDS readings were up down all over the place. I'm now thinking could it be a faulty TDS Meter?

IN the grand scheme of things this has only been used for 5 mins so nothing would need replacing or has run out.

I will go back to Pure freedom on Monday but I would be very grateful for any help or advice on this from some of this forums more experienced members.

Thanks in advance

Steve

All the best

Steve

Hi Mick,

Thanks for the input and 12 ppm doesn't sound much I agree but I must find out why 000 was being produced and then seemingly not, if it is in fact as simple as a dodgy TDS meter I will be happy. :)

OK here are some numbers:

Tap water 316ppm
Reading after RO but before DI 14ppm
1st Pure Output reading 7ppm
2nd reading 10ppm
3rd reading 8ppm
4th reading 8ppm
5th reading 8ppm

I live in a hard water area, and my output from my ro is about the same. I did last year have a bad bag of resin, which took my readings after di to about 10. I cleaned out the di vessel and replaced the resin, all was fine after that.

My DI vessel is brand new or could it have been in stock for a while and would explain poor performance?

What i meant was, it was bad batch of resin, not the whole vessel.

Do you have a new bag of resin that you could try?

Hi Steve

How large is the DI vessel?  To give you an idea of how long it will need between top ups, here are some figures below all based on an RO output of 14 ppm:

250ml = 357l produced
700ml = 1000l produced
6l = 8500l produced

It is worth remembering that for the initial 5-10 minutes of production the RO will produce water of a higher TDS which can severely reduce the life span of resin, particularly if using a small container.

NO I was told that I would not need to think of replacing anything for at least 4 months maybe 6.

I will see if the company will send me a bag.

Hi,

All I can tell you is it's a 10 inch DI Housing complete with Refillable Cartridge and Charge of Resin.

I've only had it a week and filled two 210 litre holding tanks and then replaced 200 litres I used.

When this was sold to me I was told it would last a great deal longer and may need to look at replacing in 4-6 months.

So far you have produced 620 litres from a 700ml canister.  You would have only got about 1000 litres from that sized canister anyway on an output of 14 ppm.  The problem you are experiencing is because the first 24 hours of use on an RO system is always dirtier than standard use.  Your RO should have settled down by now so is at optimum production level but as this is still only producing 14 ppm (which is well within its parameters) you should really look at getting a much larger DI vessel.  Otherwise you will be changing resin at least once a week if not more often.

The size canister you have is fine if you were on cleaner water.  My RO produces water at 1 ppm (input 75) so the same sized canister lasts about 6-8 weeks.

Hi Alex,

Many thanks for that you have explained a lot, I will go back to the supplier on Monday and see what they say etc, I will update here as to what happens.

Hi All,

Just an update on this issue!

Turns out it was the resin, purchased some more refilled the DI and am producing pure water at 000 TDS immediately.

Thank you to everyone who took part in this thread I have learnt a little more.
