i had sky fitted in my new house last week i was talking to the guy, they drill a anchor point in your wall and secure there ladder to it when they hav done they fill the hole with silicon all down to health and safety hope this helps

Ladders can still be used where it is reasonably practicable.

Which means  time over cost and effort.

If you still use ladders that is your choice and it isnt illegal.

it does seem strange that out of all the jobs out their, it seems that only window cleaning is where their use is frowned upon.

I see that sky tv have made steps to ensure their installers are safe up a ladder, the installers have to drill into the wall to attatch their ladders to the house to stop their ladders slipping away, and I can't see that they could do much more than that, short of putting scaffolding up at each house.

However I saw a BT engineer climbing a ladder and then the telegraph pole, now couldn't BT use a vehicle mounted cherry picker on 99% of their telegraph poles?

Seems to me the only trade you ever hear about ladders being banned in is window cleaning?

and window cleaning seems to be the only trade that the myth of a ban has had an impact.

The h&s in this country is very strange and they basically have put down many GUIDELINES that help you to follow there recommendations, so ladders are not categorically banned, HOWEVER if you have an accident with ladders, you will be in the wrong as you probably were not using them safely hence you had an accident So the owness is on you the ladder user, or employer to limit there use when practical or not use at all, and when necessary to use them take steps (like sky) to make sure there is no accident , pluis wfp is around and does a good job for 90% of windows so that is a good alternative for maintenance cleans, etc
I dont understand the debate all the time - seems very simple to me, at the end of the day use your common sense, if something seems risky dont do it

As above, safety is common sense and risk assessment.  As said, if it seems risky and risking the chance of a fall - chances are..........it's risky and you could well fall.

For my two penneth the reason window cleaners are at a greater risk rather than other professions,e.g sky installers,is the speed at which they work.Time is money for self employed people so its tempting to cut corners to get onto the next house as quick as you can.The window cleaner down my road fell off his ladder and broke his leg last week overreaching.People who earn a wage can take their time more.

I completely agree with what you have stated.......... 

Health & Safety must be paramount in our line of work.

As for if they are banned or not, the fact is "ladders should only be used on any building classed as a place of work if there is no other alternative". In saying that, on Commercial work this should be common practice, reducing the risk of any accident from Working at Height (WAHD) using ladders.

Obviously eye bolts, ladder stabilisers, ladder footed also reduces the risks of the ladder moving or slipping.

I use ladders & waterfed pole system, and on every Commercial premises submit Risk Assessments/Method Statements & Insurance documentation detailing which method will be used for different areas of their building.

I DONT THINK we could all agree on this subject, but all i will say is - Health & Safety is the most important aspect of my business & I cut no corners for myself, staff and members of the public.

So although there is always a place for ladders for window cleaners, the waterfed pole system is certainly the best thing to be introduced into our industry since i started cleaning windows over 26 years ago !
