Careful if you're selling a van!
« on: July 13, 2009, 08:31:33 am »
Chap I know had an unpleasant experience last week in Bristol.

He runs a small one man band business (not window cleaning) and bought a newer large van and decided to sell his old one rather than trade it in.

He gets a call off a very polite guy purporting to be from Manchester who "desperately" needs a van and will give him £2000 for it sight unseen - doesn't even ask the mileage or condition. Arranges to come down to Bristol two days later to get it. (This was a van that was probably worth about £1600 in the sellers view.)

Bloke turns up with a mate and goes for the jugular in a verbal and intimidatory way. (Bear in mind that the seller is an older chap in his sixties on his own in a tiny industrial unit.)

"That's a F***** shed, I've come all this way - you didn't tell me it was a load of S***! I'll give you £500." When the chap refuses the guy gets mouthier and starts screaming about his fuel costs and that he'd better reimburse him or else.

Chap gathers his wits and says clear off or I'll call the police and the guy blocks him from going into his own office to the phone. Then he runs over to his fork truck, nicks the key and runs to his mate who drives off!

Police reckon it was a pair of local Pikeys who thought they could either get a cheap van, nick something else for a later break-in or get fuel money by pretending they'd come all the way from Manchester.

The chap has now got to change the ignition key on his fork truck and is expecting a break in sometime over the next twelve months by someone who has the key for it.

Be careful out there and if a phone offer sounds too good to be true it probably is - and don't leave your missus alone to receive prospective buyers!

Hang'em I say!
It's a game of three halves!

no don't hang em,   there is a use for them.   take them to the nearest safari park and feed them to the tigers, at least you get some use out of them then and the tigers get a wee treat.

Yes a timely warning there, thaks for sharing it.

Given the number of vans for sale in the UK, and the size of the city of Manchester, I doubt I would havr given them my contat details to be honest.

Interesting scam though.

this is another scam to be carful of at the minute

my cousin was selling his car for 9k in the autotrader , gets a call from some guy who says he lives to far away to come and see the but its the exact model he was looking if he was to hold it for him he would pay an extra 100quid,  send him a cheque then pick the car on on sat it being monday when he rang. any way few days later cheque arrives in a brown envelope with nigerian stamps allover it   (nigeria scam capital of the world) the cheque was written out for 14k five grand above the asking price anyway he took the cheque down to the local bank and they said the cheque looked dodgey they would not lodge it to his account.

he explained where he got the cheque from and they said he should contact the police.the buyer then phoned again and then my cousin who never let on he had already tried to lodge the cheque said he had over been paid by 5k the buyer then said it was a mistake he was buying another car in the area as well and had got the prices round the wrong way could he possibly transfer 5k to his account so the cheque can be cleared for the other car .

this was the scam if he hadnt of taken the day off work especially to go and lodge the cheque and also had 5k in the bank it might have just been transferred to him. hope i explained this right and it saves someone from getting stung
