Does anyone recommend the use of safety mats for ladders or the stopper blocks for ladders?

I use the ladder mats too and find they're excellent.  I always carry two with me in my bucket.

As for a ladder stopper, I generally use Wor Lass's feet, but heard that the Rojak Ladder Stopper is very good.

Something that I have found useful on wet, mossy patios is to put a cloth underneath the ladder.  I use heavy duty oven cloths to wipe the sills - especially in Winter and I use one of these if the patio is a bit slippery.  I did try a stopper and a safety mat at different times but I found that they did sometimes move (I had someone footing the ladder while I tested this out BTW)  :-) .  I tend to stand the ladder up a bit more vertically in these circumstances as I work alone.
I tend to use the heavy duty oven cloths for sill wiping - especially in Winter.  This is because some of the lighter weight cloths get soaked in no time on those damp atmospheric days.
I'm a willing learner here too.  I am always willing to learn things to make the job easier, quicker, or safer.

Just bought and used my Rojak ladder stopper - excellent and comes with a definitive backing from Leeds university - I feel much safer now

I'm mainly on the pole nowadays but my ladders have articulated "lyte" feet and I always, always (did I say always?) use ladder mitts on the tops -  they are brilliant!
It's a game of three halves!

Most janitorial supply shops will stock them. There are online stockists too.  I use Soap National http://http://www.soapnational.co.uk/  .  There are others but I haven't tried them.
As another poster said :-  Make sure you get ladder mitts for the top of the ladder.  I personally would not do without them.

Don't know whether you'll find this helpful.

I've got a "Rojak" which gets used on one or two jobs. One in particular, which is a "double fronted" house directly at the edge of a pavement; the Tarmac has a steep slope down towards the kerb, but the pavement is too wide to place the ladder stiles in the gutter.

Only had it slip once, and that was on Thursday whilst at a new job. I put it on some wooden decking which has a covering of green growth - very nasty!

and,

The top of my ladder always wears a "Wickes" stand-off; it is fitted with two rubber pads which,

a/ allows me some space between the glass and the ladder top, thus eliminating the "Spiderman" effect, eg being pressed against the glass, having run out of ladder before running out of window!

b/ provides friction on the wall.

c/ can sometimes be placed [wedged?] immediately below the sill, and reduces the likelihood of sideways movement.

d/ allows access to windows above those bays that have pitched roofs, the ones where the ladder rests on the gutter of the bay before resting on the brickwork above.
