Advertising That Works

In my opinion for advertising to work for every £100 spent, you would want to see a return of £400.

Or am I just another muppet that post on here.

depending on what type of advert. the most cost effective way that i find works is the simple flyer, every 10.000 leaflets will bring you around 100 + jobs , if you have made an offer  that they cant resist, the most effective word in advertising is FREE. THAT WORD WILL INCREASE YOUR RESPONSE, BUY ONE GET ONE FREE. FREE CARPET FRESHNER. FREE STAIN REMOVAL. FREE SURVEY. WHATEVER YOU CAN INCORPARATE THE SPECIAL WORD WILL BRING WORK IN. THE MORE FREE THE MORE WORK, YOU WILL BE TOLD THAT BY USING THE WORD FREE DIMINISHES TO A PROSPECT THE QUALITY OF SERVICE, THAT IS NOT SO. The word " Guarantee" is also powerful. Together with a USP this forms the basis for my ads.

Dave, on a 4-1 return if you want to earn a £100,000 then its easy just spend £25,000 on marketing. but have you got the guts to put that much money in ;)

Alternatively........... Don't get me started!! Just  remember... SHY MEN ARE POOR MEN!!
Before I left a well know franchise, it was me who was responsible for the brand new BMW 330 Ci, and Merc SL 500 that were parked up outside for Mr and Mrs owner. It was me responsible for producing prospects then converting them to regular clients, enable Mr Mrs Owner to live the extravagant life styles that they were living at the time, not to mention responsible for keeping four vans on the road.

I was brash and LOUD and flirtatious to most women which Mr owner didn't like, and after the bath incident it was the end for me.
Now when I drive passed 1yr later what do I see..... Three vans parked up nearly all of the time and the merc and beemer seem to have turned in to a P reg Escort and Volvo 240!! ;D
No matter how many emails they decide to send me or how many annoying phone calls I receive the final nail went into the coffin after my dismissal and as far as they are concerned they can find a dark orifice to stick their £47.000 offer up.
I have now decided to fund my own lavish life style from now on.

Ps.. Who said 'T' bloody Yorkshire men cant make good salesmen!! ;D

I aim at 4-1.  Every £1 spent I get £4 back.  Letters to previous customers will beat this no problem.  Flyers can be hit or miss but must be looked at over a period of months.  Yellow pages can also be hit and miss but more importantly can attract the 'wrong' type of client very regularly even when they decide to pay higher prices.

I dont agree with Ian Harpers idea of the 'back end' as I find carpets and customers have a certain life span which is not always long term and so you should never aim or except a loss with any marketing.

Sherlock - I find it very hard to believe you get 10 jobs per 1000 flyers UNLESS your very cheap.  Could you explain your position for us.

that is the national average. it is extremely unlucky should you get less than 1% response. however if you are working in a locationwere a lot of flyers are hitting the streets at the same time you will i suspect get less. however i would expect you to catch your target in subsequent ndrops, i do not advise you to use national companies for your drops as u may well find that they are dropping other flyers at the same time. possibly other carpet cleaners, but the real probem is that the more flyers in any drop often results in the wastebin without reading, al\so iuse a different colour paper such as yellow one moth blue another time. visibility works. and you are correct pricing i base upon the current state of th market, if its quiet prices drop and vice versa. its no good sitting waiting for that phone to ring price keenly and work comes sherlock

Dave I was slightly taking the mick ;) but on your maths if you spent 25k then you would earn 100k

what percent you achieve with leaflets is meaningless, some one who charges £60 for a suite will need to get twice the return I get at £120.

to be constantly working you need to be putting out 16-20,000 a month, every month.

because you wouldn't be that bothered.

But if you spent £1000 on something you would want to see a good return.

Different advertising will work in different ways, for different people, operating in different areas, charging different prices.

i found at start up level door knocking produced an UNBELEIVABLE response for your outlay. overcome your shyness get out there. newspaper adverts and leaflets could not come close to the levels you can expect with a pleasant chat and a business card. choose your area not to upmarket but definitely aspirational. choose your time -sat, sun and b holidays are best. 500 cards- £30 30-40 houses an hour. every 30-40 cards should produce £30-100 business. bang for your buck? also keep it local at this level put your home address on your cards talk about local things GIVE PEOPLE CONFIDENCE. most people should have several hundred/thousand houses nearby. ps i avoid near neighbours. as your business expands you must unfortuneatly rely on other methods more and more.
