Strange Vac Problems
« on: June 16, 2009, 08:28:01 pm »
Hi all,

Just wondering if any of ye have ever come across this problem:
When I turn on the first vac on my porty (powerflite 1350) its ok but when i turn on the second one both vacs start whizzing really loud like water has got into them and theres no suction.
I spoke to the one of the guys at the place I purchased the machine and he reckons that they have got moisture in them possibly from going over a patch of carpet where somebody has used vanish or the likes. So he told me its only a matter of time b4 they go. So I ordered two new ones and got them today.
They seem to work for most of the day if i have them running first thing for about 15 - 20 mins with lid off and no hoses.
But then if i try to put one on straight after the other this problem occurs.
I was told never to start both vacs together cos of amount of ampage or something so maybe this could have contributed to the problem too.
Any input would help.
Also are the vacs fairly straighforward to replace on the powerflite. Ive done them on other machines in the past.

Regards Brendan

I tried to clean a red wine stain up last year and realised that I was sucking Vanish and exactly the same thing happened, both motors whizzing and no suction whatsoever.... It begs the question, could anything be introduced into the motors to dispel water/moisture? Such as WD40 or lotoxine....

try loosening or tightening the screws that hold the vacs in place .I had that sort of problem when the vacs weren't tightened properly .Hope it sorts it for you .Other than that wouldn't know

I was wondering this too after last week where I nearly blew the scorpian up twice on the same job. I always use defoamer but that wasn't enough to create noise/steam/smoke coming from the machine.....foam loads of it.
I then put a good 1 litre of defoamer in and it happened again >:(
God only knows what the previous owner of thiscarpet must have used on it....Fairey liquid perhaps >:(

Just keep them running to dry them out if you have the vanish problem :)

Agree with this. Its probably that when you pull a high vac, ie second motor on, that both motors bottom out and stop turning. In our powermax, they are mounted on foam gaskets that compress over time. I presume this is a typical design.

Is the machine pulling a vac with only 1 motor on?  If so, try loosening the bolts that hold the motors down.

Its not just the ball shut off playing up is it? Not familiar with cfr but on other machines if the cage that the ball is in is dirty it can cause the ball to shut off too early.

Just read what  about those new vacs from china. Two days too late!!!
They arrived two days ago and was going to fit thaem over the weekend, dunno if i will now.
Got big job on at moment student accomodation and cant be having that kind of hassle.
Good bit of advice about tightening the screws that hold the vacs in place maybe that might sort it.
Anyway thanks for the help guys.

Hi Darren,
I had to buy mine mate. (Got the cheap chinese ones but bit apprehensive about fitting them after what Ive read recently). My warranty had run out.
Bit disappointed with how long they lasted because they didnt get a whaole lot of use with the recession n all.
Up the walls at the mo and typically thats when they start to play up. Sods Law.

On my powermax if the bolts on the motors are too tight they make a whirrling noise.
